Just had what I was told was a Savage 24 in 357 mag over 20 ga come in the door.

Opened up the package and looked up the serial number and made it out to 1983.

Then I noticed the stamp on the top barrel, "357 Rem Max", really wasn't expecting that but made it alot cooler.

Anyways, it has a scope mount on it and missing the front and rear sights. Wondering if anyone here knows the correct height for a Lyman 16 sight on a 24V?

It is to the 357 mag as the 357 mag is to the 38 Special. In other words, it is a lengthened 357 magnum loaded to a bit higher pressure.

Cool buy and I am slightly envious of the OP though I am not much of a fan of the Model 24. 357 Max has an intrigue all of its own.

Find out tomorrow when I hit the local GS, if Reg doesn't have any I know for sure where to find some. There's a very old gunshop about 3 hours away and carries pretty much any caliber you can think of. Stacks of 32-40, 25-35, 303 Sav, even saw an original box of Win 45-90 on the shelf with 6 original rounds in it.

Wasn't there problems with the 357 Max and gas cutting on revolver top straps? I don't think it was a problem with 'normal barrels' where there was no gap between chamber and barrel but it's been a lot of years since I read about it. Might be worth looking into.

I'm leaning more and more toward having one of my Martini Cadets re-barreled to .357 Max, or else a .22 wildcat based on that case which would give approximate .222 Remington performance.

Might want to check the cost of dies and steps to reform whatever wildcat round you are looking at.

The Max is also a very popular Contender pistol barrel.

It's a fairly popular wildcat among Martini loonies. CH-4D makes dies, $109 for two die set or $82 for just the sizer (I can seat with my .22 Vickerman universal straightline seater). PTG makes the reamer. Brass is out here to be had, and if intermediate forming dies are needed, well, it wouldn't be the first time I cobbled stuff like that together- a bridge to be crossed when I get there.

The same case necked down to .30 would make a dandy .30 caliber cast bullet shooter too, methinks. Perhaps a two-barrel set, with takedown capability? With a nice fitted case to hold them. Hmmm....

The .357 Max is neat in its own right but presents problems in original form in getting it to make the turn down and into the Martini chamber- hence the proclivity for necking it down. The shape of the wildcat gives it that little bit of an edge in defeating that issue.

Such a beast obviously wouldn't have an auxiliary shotgun barrel slung under it, but I never felt the need for such a combo. And since I'm not a collector hell-bent on amassing a complete Savage collection I just don't want any. More power to those who do!
