Just got done cleaning a Savage 1899 H? TD in 25-35. Ser # 119xxx. Has a 24 inch round barrel with a Willams peep sight. All numbers matching. Has the metal crescent butt. I believe made in 1911? Hopefully Jeff G will post the picture. Is it safe to shoot the new Hornady or Winchester ammo in it? Believe it or not I looked at another 25-35 savage last month! Amazing all the rarer rifles/calibers coming to the surface lately. TY

1899H with a 24" barrel?????? never seen one??? are the last 3 numbers of the serial number stamped on the takedown barrel?

Ser # is stamped on the butt stock plate and on the forearm. Didn't see any numbers on barrel except for caliber and 1899 model. I could be wrong that its not an H? Is it safe to fire new ammo in this rifle? I recently fired the Hornady 25-35 ammo in a Winchester 1894 TD(I believe it was made in 1907) and it shot fantastic.

With a cresent butt and 24" barrel ,i'm thinking 1899A takedown ,with either a newer barrel,or a barrel that might have been cut back 2". As far as firing the rifle i would check the headspace before i shot it, some thing seems odd about it.The last 25-35's were made in 1917 but all were made for smokeless ammo.

I could not unscrew barrel. But I also cleaned an 1899 H TD in 22 hi power years ago that the barrel wouldn't unscrew(was only a 20 inch barrel on it) I just remeasured the 25-35 and its definitely 24 inches. Ty for answering my ammo question

With the crescent buttplate it will be a model 1899A, as Loggah said. The 24" barrel might be special order, because 26" was the standard - or cut down 2" as he suggested.

The new 25-35 ammo is fine for old 25-35 rifles including the Savage rifles, if the Savage rifle is good.

If the serial number (or part of it) is on the barrel, it will be on the bottom of the barrel by the OFF stamp.

Calhoun, the only markings are a zero stamped in front of where the OFF stamp should be but is NOT present. Zero is in the ser # 119083. This rifle was not fired much at all. The bore is great with just a small amount of frosting in it. The action is very clean and tight, as is the lever and slide safety. No rattling whatsoever. Wood may have been refinished but no cracks or big gouges anywhere. Front sight is a blade sight, Rocky mountain? I don't think it was cut. bore is rounded NOT straight cut.

24" barrel with a rounded crown must be a substitute off a later rifle. Still looks like a fun rifle!

Was just looking at a picture of one of my early takedown barrels, and it had similar markings. No OFF stamp and just a letter on the barrel. So nothing wrong with that.

Early 1899A/B/C's had a flat cut muzzle, so it sounds as though aftermarket shortened or a later barrel. Nice gun, better shape than my 25-35's.

I had a chance at an all original 1899H in 25-35 for $800 at a Beckley, WV gun show. Walked away from it for a minute. Came back, gone. Dumb, dumb move.

Ty JeffG. She definitely shoots. 4 shots at 30 yds. Shot on the left was first shot. That new Hornady 110 gr pointed ammo is good stuff. Winchester ammo was 117 gr flat nose, shot okay.

JeffG, that looks like a nice rifle, for sure. Like the perch belly stock. Any more pictures of the rifle?
