Came into a very nice, 70s vintage trapper (Queen) and to call it a nail breaker doesn't begin to describe its pull. Remedies?

A little steel thingy that looks like a guitar pick. I have a couple knives like that and the little steel gizmo is about the only way to leverage the blade open. I don't futz with them anymore, just not worth the effort.
A repairman would punch out the center or back pin and grind the spring down thinner to soften it up.
