Had a chance to work up some stuff out of a piece of 01 recently acquired.
Got a small camp hatchet design I worked up. Also did a double edge dagger,
two small bowie types and two larger drop points.
Differential heat treat.
They are in the oven right now. When I get some finished I will get someone
to post a pic here for me.

I really like 01 steel.

New to me. I will be doing some use testing to see how it does.
Seemed easy enough to process.

I started out with O1, no problems with it at all.

I went away from it because most folks want stainless of some sort.

B. Goode uses O1 almost exclusively.

Let me say I have zero experience with 01
Given that there are a host of newer tool steels; stainless steels and super steels available, that on paper, appear to out perform 01, under what circumstances would one pick a knife made of 01 ?

Cost? To try something different?
Posted By: Mannlicher Re: 01 steel - 12/17/20
O1, A2, 52100, 1095 and some others are still darn hard to beat. I have never been disappointed in the performance of an O1 blade.

What Sam said plus there was a large strip of it came available and was just
begging me to do something with it.. I also think the differential heat treated
blades are cool.

I have already worked with 52100, 440C, A2, 145CM, CPM 154, S30V, M4 and now S35VN, so.........

Sam.----would you post a pic of them here if I sent it to you???

Tim, those look really nice. What material will you use for the handles? I’m a big fan of the o1 steel. I find that the Randall o1 is soft but is easy sharpen and maintain. What hardness did you temper the blades at?
Posted By: michiganroadkill Re: 01 steel - 12/18/20
So, when the O1 became available, I jumped on it with the camp hatchet in mind. The 5 knife
blades were an after thought.
I think the hatchet and drop point will make a good pair. "Camp Buddies"??????

The dagger style is an attempt at a Scagel pattern copy, which Sam will have first dibs if I sell it.

The blades were oil hardened (note temper line) and other than skating a file over them I do not know the Rc of them.

The 2 Bowie style and 1 of the drop points will probably be for sale when I get around to them. This
project was kind of a fill in while getting the S35VN project moving along.

Opinions/thoughts on the hatchet, drop point pair????????

Thanks
Tim

Tim, did you mention the size specs on the hatchet and knives?
Posted By: michiganroadkill Re: 01 steel - 12/18/20
No, sorry about that. Probably would help in making suggestions.

They are cut from 3/16" stock.

The hatchet is 11 1/2" long and 4" from spine to cutting edge.
Cutting edge is 4". Thinking it could chop, baton and shave fire starter.

The knife is 11" long with 6" cutting edge and 1 1/4" width.
The knife could do some of the stuff the hatchet does plus normal cutting jobs.

Sam
After I get them handled, sharpened and sheaths made I will do some testing.
BUT, with all your bush activities maybe I should then send them to you for
evaluation during a couple of your excursions.

We have several outings planned for February and March. Couple of wilderness paddle trips and some 4x4 swamp/forest jaunts. The little camp hatchet would enjoy it.
Posted By: michiganroadkill Re: 01 steel - 12/18/20
So I will target January to get them to you.
Posted By: Mannlicher Re: 01 steel - 12/18/20
Any time before mid February
Posted By: michiganroadkill Re: 01 steel - 12/19/20
Roger that.
I will be handling the hatchet and drop point with some real nice fiddle back maple
in the next day or so. Then out back for some hands on use.

Crap. I do not have the Loveless Bolts I need. Have to order some stuff anyhow.
