Anyone ever use a Burr King 562?

I know about 2x72s, but I'm not into $3k for this hobby yet.
Could easily, not sure I'm there though.

Have a line on this 562 for a few hundred bucks.
Hoping it would improve on my 4x32 which is not great.
Pic indicate a need to build a more narrow platan,
Can get a guy at work to do it in his spare work time.
Or do it myself in my spare free time.

Any thoughts?

If you're just starting off, you can make good serviceable knives on a Grizzly 2x72. I never cared for the Burr King, but I'm sure others like it. If I was buying a top machine I'd stick with a Bader or KMG Both have tons of accessories and options for your future growth.

Damn good machine. I’ve got kmg, badors, tw90, 960 burr king and several I made. I had the machine your looking at.

Thanks guys.

I'm gonna try to get that machine.

If you all happen back here, anyone else join in...

I've got a brainstorm to build a knife set as a gift for my
daughter's impending wedding.

Being blunt, the knives I've made from 80CRV2 turned out as good cutting
and comfortable knives. But....they look like early efforts of someone with little artistic ability.

I'm thinking AEBL for her knives.
I don't need to get fancy steel, not for her use or my end products.
It is supposed to be like carbon but stainless.
Not a bad place to be for someone not knife savvy.

Gonna get them heat treated, I'm not equipped for that at all.
Peter's is who I had in mind.

Good plan, bad plan?
A better plan?

I'm open to ideas.

I've sent many blades to Peters and never been disappointed. I have never used AEBL, I have pretty much settled on 154cm and/or cpm154.

What size belt does the Burr King use?

This is just 1x48.

Don't know what's gonna happen now.

Was texting with the guy, setting a time to meet.
Figured to be upfront and told him I have the Chinese Crud, out of
quarantine, but required to mask yet.

Suddenly....crickets.

What a freaking Ăsshole.
Straight up with him, even said I'd be glad to wait until nest week if he wanted. And his nuts shrunk into his throat so far he cant type!

Arrives in boxes, assembly required. Saw a video of unpacking and assembly. I think time is around 2 hours. I don’t have one, but on my bucket list.

I’m still just rocking my grizzly 2x72 and 1x42. Going to add a better one someday, but a guy can get a lot done with the grizzlies. if I only had one, I’d skip the 1x and go straight to a 2x72 were it me.
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: Grinders - 12/02/22
Appreciate it guys.

BBG, I have the attention span of a squirrel.
Just can't bring myself to buy that kind of equipmnent when i know
doing this project is likely to burn me out. I'd love to have a Bader with
VLD and several tool options, could make it work even.
But it just doesn't makes sense for me.

Still haven't heard from the guy.
What a XXXX! Was straight woth him, gave him options.
He just ghosted.

I'll be dipped, ducked out, messaged him and he answered.

Kmg or bader for all around versatility.

If cost is no issue Tw90 is the king.

A good friend of mine has 3 badors and a grizzly. He grinds ever blade on his grizzly. It’s probably 15 years old and it’s been used daily

Don't fell I can lose too bad on this however I drift.

Thing is around $2k from a quick look.
Guy is asking $450, has had it for sale for over a week.
I haven't even put on my German Ancestery, Pa Farmer background,
persona yet. If I pay over 4 bills i can never tell Dad! blush

If he didn't have a busted ankle I'd take him along.
We might waste half the day, but the poor bastard would be giving us
extra crap to shut up and leave!😁😁😁

So, did you buy it? How’s she work?
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: Grinders - 12/10/22
Bought it. Ordered belts, some steel.

It has a wider table and a 3" platen added.
No idea WITH a guy does wit a 3" platen behind a 1" belt, tomorrow I'm
going to see what that needs. Either make one or order it.

Ordered AEB-L and some 8670. Never used 8670, but it sounds easy
to heat treat crudely. Gonna grind some junk out of it, before I try the
stainless. Can do my own treat for free, make anything knife shaped into
a useable knife.

If I gotta pay to ship/treat something, I want it to be worth the $$$

Most any reasonable 2x72 will way out perform other configurations. A 1x42 for handle work is
the other need.
That 3" platen has to go. Platen width needs to match belt width for blade bevels and plunges.
Just my opinion, and I know others have more experiences than me.
A Burr King 2x72 and a Kalamazoo 1x42 takes care of all my needs other than hand sanding.
Just my 2 cents.

8670 is badass... Do you have a kiln or an oven?
Posted By: Dillonbuck Re: Grinders - 12/11/22
A little forge.

As above I'm new, short attention span, no work shop. It just doesn't
Make sense to spend a bunch on one of my passing interests.

BGG.

I will.

I would like to add this to the conversation for no particular reason other than “just because”. Rick, I have always admired your knives and your craftsmanship so your opinion carries a lot of weight. I have known Travis’ dad Marvin for sixty years, more or less. My son asked me to attend a “hammer in” at their shop a couple years ago. It was a great weekend and learned a lot about knife making from some other talented craftsmen. There were lots of TW90 parts laying around waiting to be assembled and shipped. My son is interested in making knives but hasn’t the time at this point in his life. If he gets to where he can, and I am able to do so, I would like to get him one of Travis’ grinders. Thanks for your opinion. It seals the deal for me.

Two cents, I made one using skate board wheels, square tubing, & 1hp motor. It's not ideal but it's way better than tha 1x42 I purchased 40yrs ago. I AM NOT A KNIFE MAKER!!! I only made different knives trying to find the best shapes for trapping, skinning, pelting, fillet, etc. There is no one knife shape for everythin, several even for one furbearing animal, around eyes, legs, starting. I gave most of mine to other trappers to get feed back. It is fun & interesting & im sure you'll get hooked!!! It's kind of like making your own bow, arrows, spear, reloads paddles, snowshoes, pack basket & using them to take game, very rewarding. Enjoy!!!$$ GWP. 🐾👣🐾👣🇨🇦
