I've never owned one so I thought I'd give one a whirl. I saw that they have some in 5160 steel, so here is the 119 in brass and black.

The brass gives it a bit more heft in the ass end.

Nice Buck 119. I bought one of the Copper & Clad Buck 118 variations with brass and 5160 - was surprised at how much extra heft the brass added to the knife as compared to my old Buck 118 with the standard aluminum. The brass gives the knife a nice look as well.

I was thinking about either the 118 or the 105 next. Which one do you prefer?

I'm thinking the 118 would be nice in the tackle box.

I have both a Buck 105 and a 118 - the 118 is my hands down favorite deer hunters knife. The handles are the same size on the 105 and the 118. Both smaller than the 119 handle, but fit my hand very nicely for skinning and butchering without fatigue (unlike the 102 handle which is too small and tiresome to use). I like the 4" blade with some belly sweep on the 118 - good skinner and just the right length without getting in the way inside a smallish whitetail. I've never had a 118 in the tackle box (I use an old Buck 121 with the thin blade for a fish knife). Give the 118 a try, I think you will like it.

While not mentioned, and not available in 5160, the little Buck 103 deserves a look. It's a handy size/shape, and well balanced, and one of my favorites. After 52yrs it still hasn't been cut from the starting lineup, and for good reason.

I've already got a 119, but plan to pick up a brass 5160 version while they're available. Also a 75th anniversary for my dad's 75th birthday next month. I'm trying to time the purchase so the date on the box hits his birthday. He'll dig that.

+1 agree, the 103 is a great choice....and available in 5160.

I've never had a 118, but the 105 is a favorite of mine. I bought a 102 but the knife is smaller than it looks and the handle is a bit too small. It is a good trout or steak knife and I gave it to one of my kids. I like the 118 better than the 119 for what I do, but I own both.

Beautiful knife SH. I have a vintage 119 from when they first came out and the steel is harder than a harlot's heart. It stays sharp a long time. I have always liked USA made Buck knives. I would call yours a "keeper".

and if you "stick" somebody, that blood groove will come in handy....

I have a 118 I use a lot. My only gripe is the tip has a little too much upsweep for my liking. Still works well and the dam things hold a real nice edge for me. The 105 is next on my list. I may have to check out the brass version.

Fullers (incorrectly called blood grooves) have nothing to do with blood. They're designed to lighten the blade while still providing strength to the spine.

That's what they make belt sanders for.....

I have a plain Jane 119 with phenolic/stainless handle and the 420HC blade. Hell for stout, but a bit big for regular use but has it's place.

My 103 arrived today and as hoped, the fit/finish is very nice. No surprise, replacing aluminum hardware with brass adds some heft and gives the knife a very solid feel. I prefer the balance of the aluminum 103, but I can see where the larger models like the 119 and 120 would really change character for the better. I'm ordering a 119 next month.

My blade has 095 engraved on the port side. I didn't know it's a numbered run.

I like your 119 I wish mine was the 5160. I also like the 120. Actually I prefer Buck Knives. I've got a 110 with the 5160. Company I worked for before I retired gave gifts to contractors and I ordered several custom 110's with the 5160 and stag grips. I kept 4 and gave some for Christmas, but kept mine unused. I've since picked up a couple more of their custom 110's (they will make one or several for you) One is Buffalo Horn, and I forget the other one. All have nickel bolsters.

Yeah, they did a special run or something with Buck and apparently the 1st 100 are numbered.

BTW, after studying photos, I think the 105 Pathfinder would be a winner (to answer your earlier question). It appears to have the same handle as the 103, and the blades would likely balance close enough to the same.

I bought a 102 Woodsman a couple years ago on a whim, and it's cute, but a little too small for my hands. The 105 is still a small knife compared to the 119/120/124, but big enough to feel good. The 103 feels smaller and handier than the spec sheet and photos imply, so I'm guessing maybe the 105 is too.

The 118 looks a lot like the 103 with the upper half missing.

No problem. I loved the looks of the 103 and bought one back in the early to mid-80's as my first "real" hunting knife. I've tried a dozen or so others over the years, but the 103 is still my favorite by far. It just feels right, and as a bonus, just looks badass to me.

Got a 119 maybe 20 years ago after my cousin got one. I silently rolled my eyes to myself about what a big useless blade it was, but after using it a little, decided maybe it does have some use, and got one myself.

The 120 I got because I remember seeing them as a kid and thinking they really looked cool, but alas, they were no longer made. Then one day 3 or 4 years ago, I saw one that is some sort of, Boone & Crockett "Hunt Fair Chase" special, in a local gun shop for something like $75 and decided that it better go home with me before they were dropped again. Since then, I see the regular 120's are back in production. I'd rather have one of them, but oh well.

A year or so ago I decided since I was this close, I ought to get a 102 and 105 to complete the lineup in size. I too, think the 102 may be a little on the small size handle-wise, but I'm hoping to use the 105 this year on a deer like I have the others in my collection, which include a small handful of other brands; but I keep coming back to the Bucks.

It weights two ounces more than the standard construction - it is heavier, about the same difference you will get with a Buck 105. Doesn't bother me, feels like a normal fixed blade to me, but it may bother some folks.

After days of internal debate I ordered a 5160 steel 118.

I think you will like the Buck 118. I took this picture today to compare the sizes of the 121 Guide, 105 Pathfinder, and the 118 Personal. These are the standard Buck knives, all older, but the same size and weight as the current ones. The 118 weighs a shade under 4 oz. the 105 and 121 a shade over. The C&C knives with the brass weigh around 6 oz. - not much difference.

The only thing I don't like with the newer knives is the sheaths. I had a 102 with the newer sheath and ended up selling it. I much prefer the older flap over style.

Tough to beat a buck fixed blade for value. My favorites are the 105 and vanguard w/o the gut hook. The pathfinder is better for field dressing and boning, vanguard makes a really good skinner.

I've owned this Buck 119 for a long long time and it probably will never wear out although the sheath was replaced.

Buck doesn't seem to be trying very hard to sell these. It's not on their website, nor available through the world's largest online retailer. Wally World appears to be where they're found. I'll pick one up the next time I ignore my better judgement and end up there.

Did a little Googling, and by golly, you're right. Found where on a S&W forum someone claiming some inside knowledge says that they're a Walmart exclusive, along with a couple others.

Visited the Buck web site today. Ordered a 119 with the S30V steel, ironwood handle, brass guard and pommel. Had it engraved. Should be a beauty, and a great performer.

I've been carrying a Buck 102 for so long that the blade is now narrower than the choil. Thinking about replacement are the 118 and 105 the same general size.

Being an avid motorcyclist who rides a 43 year-old motorcycle (think on-the-spot/side-of-the-road emergency repairs) I'm a HUGE fan of the Buck 105.

I like it's heft, balance & the blade's incredible ability to hold even the most modest sharpening.
It's something I've come to appreciate when sawing through a section of 3/8" steel-braided hose or stripping down a piece of 10-gauge battery cable.

I recently purchased a second one, simply because the price was a steal, but was immediately disgusted by the all-looks/no-functionability "tacti-cool" sheath they now come with.
A quick trip to eBay & I scored an old-style snap-flap sheath for it.

The 105 (and 119, and all the others in that series) comes with a fairly nice leather sheath, unless you get it at a mega mart, then they sometimes come with an ugly nylon sheath that is 1.5 times as large as it needs to be.

That's the fugly one I'm talking about.
I got my second 105 online because the $$$ savings were phenomenal & it came with that abortion they refer to as a sheathIt quickly found a home in the trash bin, where garbage belongs.

My 120 came today and is every bit the knife my older Bucks are. Polished and scary sharp, with an excellent grind, and the sheath fits nice as well.
