The wife asked what Dad day gift our dog could get me? An axe sounded as good as anything, plus owning a nice axe, if cared for, can last a lifetime...So I asked my dog for an axe...This is on its way.

Hmm, should have borrowed one of your axes and asked the dog for a new rifle instead...😬😎

My meager collection.
The old Plumb Cruiser is probably my favorite. It definitely sees the most use.

I've come to appreciate 36" axes with 3 1/2 pound heads for most stuff. Short axes are like mini chainsaws to me.
Posted By: FieldGrade Re: Axe for Fathers Day - 06/12/18
Depends on what you're doing.....for serious splitting I use my splitting maul or a sledge and wedges but about the only thing I split these days is kindling for the wood stove and that old Plumb with a 2# head and 28" haft is just right. The hatchets are for camping.

Don......I like that smaller knife at the bottom of your pic a lot.....
Who made it?

Ryan Arrington. 3 finger model in stag. My EDC.....

Something along the lines of a small forest axe is mighty handy. For me, maybe not quite as big as you're describing, but certainly bigger than the average hatchet.

I should have known.....Ryan makes some nice stuff....

Beaver10,
Your Dog knows axes for sure!

I have more than a few and the Hudson Bay pattern has been a long time favorite and more recently I've been using several Small Forest axe's (Gransfors Bruk & Hults Bruk) in my travels. For bigger jobs I rely on the old Collins.

That's a nice HB... The pack basket as well.
Posted By: Steelhead Re: Axe for Fathers Day - 06/13/18
I just find the longers axes safer for chopping down trees, limbing etc. No doubt different axes for different uses.

I'm about to put a boy's head on a 36" haft.

Agree with you... Boy's axe pattern is another must have. Council Tool makes a nice one if you are buying new.

Council Tool.......the last of the old American ax manufacturers and a great value.
IIRC I paid less than $25 for the Council Boys Ax that lives in my truck.

Seriously, I have a slightly different model axe from Gränsfors Bruk too and I really like it.

I took a tour of the Gränsfors Bruk company a few years ago, and I met 3 of the dozen or so axesmiths. Each smith stamps their initials on every ax -- and if one of their axe heads ever cracks and is returned (no time limit warranty), that particular smith is subject to a lot of ribbing from the others. :-)

I zoomed in on your picture, and your particular ax was made by "EB" who is Eric Blixt. No particular reason other than I found it interesting to connect a particular ax to a face, but here is a picture of the guy who made your specific ax:

I just thought you (and your dog!) might find this interesting! smile

Cheers from Sweden,
John

John, Very cool of you to pass me that info, and picture of the guy Erik who made the axe head...Thank you!

Totally, wish it was the girl in the photo who made the axe, though...She’s way better to look at.

P.S. Dog says thanks, too...Mark 😎
