There are some beloved knife makers on here such as Ingram, May, Winston, and Dozier.

What up and coming makers out there are doing practical hunting blades, with well treated and ground steel, and a good kydex holster? I think the "ideal" working knife would be 3.5", drop point blade, hollow ground, with a low profile kydex. Micarta or wood scales, but nothing fancy.

Nothing wrong with the fellas above, but the wait list and prices reflect their high quality reputation and I figure there must be some others out there that are doing good work at reasonable prices that dont get the attention they deserve.

What say the fire?

Look at Mike E Miller here on the forums. Here is a thread with some of his knives. Also michiganroadkil is another member who makes knife. Not sure about the kydex holster

Joel Clark, Shannon Steel Labs, Marauder Knife & Tool, and Double X Knives are all top notch and as good if not better than the ones you listed.
If you want a top shelf knife - contact Lucas Forge.
Just keep your fingers away from the blade. They are by far the sharpest knives I’ve ever used. They hold an edge like no other.

Out of those mentioned, Joel Clarke and Lucas forge look the best, designs, finish etc. double x look like shiit..

Looks like Joel’s website was last updated in 2015, anyone know if he’s still making knives? I’d like to order one.

MCH,
Have you cooled on Big Brown Bear? I think Shawn is doing some important work, though I find I am still attracted to more traditional blade shapes. Would like to try one of his Mini Trappers at some point.
Shawn is in a league all his own. I would say he is what Phil was back in the day. The torch has been passed. Phil is still hands down my favorite and Shawn I think will be right there with him once the dust settles.
Here are a few that may or may not be out of your price point. Also some will have waits.

Triple B Handmade
David Mary
J. Hoffman
Warren J. Krywko
Ben Breda
Deering knives
Big Chris
Jack O'Neill
Leucdia Custom Knives

NO Hell NO Shawn is the Man! But out of the OP's price point.
Big Chris is probably one of the most under rated makers out there. Which is a shame because his work is amazing. He has his following but not what it should be. But the higher end working knives have a small audience. A lot of good makers out there and some really great ones too.I try to focus on the ones really trying to push what is doable.
If you like those you mentioned in the OP....

Ken Honeycutt. Great guy to work with.

Bryant Hollinger. Few months ago got a skinner from him. Real nice.

I like plain Jane working knives. I top out at the $300 mark. I personally can’t justify anything over that. But that’s me. Guess i could spring for a $500 knife instead of 2x$250. 🤷🏽‍♂️.

Lot of new guys are on Instagram these days.

Good time to be buying knives.

Find a maker that’ll make what you want and have fun with it.

I’m liking brad Watkins work too

RNF
These recommendations are right on. I own a few from both and hope to get more.
I have a little Skinner from Miller in 440C, hollow ground. Nothing too fancy but the way if fits in my hand it just feels great. I think I got it from Vince out of the Classifieds a year or two ago. Really like it a lot.
I have a couple from Tim in M4, both arrived laser freakin sharp and can cut all day long. A buddy I hunt with is coveting Tim's Loveless style DP.. I'm just trying to keep him away from it.

A lot of good names in this thread..
You bastids are costing me ..

CORRECTION: I don't own a Mike Miller knife (yet!), the one I was thinking of is a Hendrix knife.

I'll throw B.Goode Knives in the mix...
Posted By: wildcat33 Re: New Makers to Consider? - 05/15/20
Great suggestions guys. M. Miller looks good, which led me to Bret Dowell that I like the looks of. Basically anything on Vince's site.

Lucas forge is also up my alley in terms of style.

I'm warming to the Instagram makers, but very slowly.

Keep em comin!

Dale howe
Brett makes very nice stuff but last I heard his back log is very long. He has his daughter making some nice ones out of AEB-L that look good too.

I appreciate all the work you put into your photos. The fact you have excellent taste in blades is also a good think.

Not “new” but Tom Krein is the best grinder in the business, bar none. He uses Bos for HT.

Several folks have pointed to makers using O1 vs stainless or “super” steels.... If you’re good with that Burt Foster is the man!!!

Tom can grind.

I would not buy another knife from him with Bos heat-treating...

Love those scales GW.

There’s also some very weird tastes here.. my guess is they don’t kill/use much, but rather imagination/pretend. Which is ok I guess.
Anything in particular wrong with the Bos heat treating?

Tom can more than grind...he is the most precise grinder in the business, unless my Zeiss and Mitutoyo Optical Metrology Systems, and measurement of hundreds of custom knives are wrong???

Also, I recently communicated with Paul Farner re a couple of knives, including a forum maker here.

From past discussions I know you are a real knife guy, so shoot me a PM if you would, re your Bos concerns and I’ll share mine...

Thanks!

Full disclosure: Todd Theyn and I had been internet buds for prolly near a decade or more before I knew he was making knives and sheaths.

Todd posts here on 24hr. using the screen name of "justahunter"

This is the first knife that I got from Todd, Weathered L6 Steel and Spalted Pecan.

IIRC, Todd told me that he had let the bar stock from which these knives were made weather for +/- 6 years.

[Linked Image from i38.photobucket.com]

It works!

[Linked Image from i38.photobucket.com]

He has been kind enough to make a set of 4 kinves for my two boys, oldest grandson and my son in law.

[Linked Image from i38.photobucket.com]

Here are two of those. He engraved their initals and birthdate on the spine of each knife.

[Linked Image from i38.photobucket.com]

and their initials on the sheath that accompanied each knife!

[Linked Image from i38.photobucket.com]

Jacob's knife was given to him on his birthday. This deer and 5 others were skinned with his knife the day he took this buck before it had to be resharpened.

The next knife is Todds interpretation of a Nessmuk style blade. Weathered L6 Steel and Buffalo horn scales

Here is a guy that also posts here from time to time.
