I had to go to Fleet Farm for a couple things for the house, so cruised sporting goods real quck while I was there. The shelves are pretty empty. If you run factory ammo and will need some for this fall, you'd best get some while you hopefully still can. Anything besides 30-06 might be a little challenging to find. Forget about pistol ammo. It's all gone.
local gs has most things but 223 and 9mm are hard to find.
Yeah fleet farm sucks for anything sports. Their new business model sucks since they got bought out a few years ago. This past spring I asked about some fishing reels they were out of. I asked when they were going to get more, and the clerk said “In February. We order for the season, and when it’s gone we don’t have any more.”

But, handgun ammo is tough to find anywhere
I expect it’s way too late for any sort of selection, maybe even any period. Been checking online when I was buying other stuff, and what I saw was pretty skimpy.

Just as with reloading supplies, you have to plan way ahead. I bought a 5-pounder of BH209 months ago, because in the past 10-ounce jugs disappeared around here very early, and if you could find it, was $40-$50.

If you need any, better get on the stick!😜
I just looked at Midway for some 7mm08 ammo and they do not have any. The 7mm-08 whitetail thread got me wanting to take out my 7mm-08. I was out of town this past Sunday and stopped by Sportsman's Warehouse and their ammo was very low. The Tikka Superlite's were on sale so I picked up a .223 but no ammo was available. Thankfully I have some .223.
You can't even get 30-06 or 30-30 here. I'm well stocked on that but it turns out I don't have any 270 and I can't find that either.
When I went last October they were plumb full of every flavor. Any thoughts as to what might have changed?
Spent Sunday at Denver Cabelas, Sportsman's Warehouse and Bass Pro. Empty shelves unless you shoot a 25-35, 25-06, or 300 mag. No .270.30-06,30-30, etc. nothing.
Fortunately, I've got enough to last me for the foreseeable future, but range time will be drastically limited.
I went into our local firearms/outdoor supplies store a few days ago to get an Off-road Vehicle tag for our Polaris Ranger. The shelves were stocked with guns, ammo, and reloading components. I guess this shows people around here don’t wait until they’re out of ammo/components before resupplying! memtb
It's been too late to shop for deer season ammo here for 3 months. There's some 300wsm, some Nosler, some Weatherby, but not much else.
Latest retail report I saw said as of October 1st ammo sales across the board up 139% year over year.

Likely contributing factors:

More new owners buying fireams?

Panic buying?

Less production due to covid shutdowns?

.....of course hunting season coming up but that would have been the same last year.
The local farm supply had tons of 6.5 Creedmoor. No .223, 308, 30-06, just some oddball magnums. So I guess you Karen’s can get your gay 6.5 on! LOL!

Yeah, my buddy was trying to find some 30-30 for his son's rifle. He used it up at some kids sight-in event. I stopped by the LGS to see if they had any for him and it was gone, gone, gone. There were 3 people waiting for the UPS driver to deliver the case of 9mm the shop ordered.

I think it's all of this, plus I've read that ammo makers are focused on 9mm, 5.56 NATO, and 45 ACP.

Local gun shops here have a little bit of 30-06, 308, 300 WM, 300 WSM, and 338 WM but mostly premium stuff. There's plenty of 7mm Mag and 270 Winchester. Most of them won't sell you more than two pounds of powder and a brick of primers.

Everything else is gone.

That's probably true. MN is FULL of weekend warriors that hunt 2 days a year. 90% of them have .30-30, .270, or .30-06's. They probably can make a box last 10 years if the scope doesn't get knocked off.

No doubt they are. A shooter will put more 9mm or 5.56 rounds down range in one session than most hunters will shoot hunting rifle ammo (30-30/.270/30-06/etc) in a lifetime. Not all hunters of course, but the average.
Observations from Texas.

Walmart still has a fair assortment of standard cup and core ammunition, federal and Winchester.

Academy has been hit and miss with very limited selection however lots of .270 everywhere.

Last I checked {a couple days ago} Budsgunshop still had .270's.

Edit.....Yep, just checked and they still have a selection of .270.
Never would have imagined this would be an area of shortage many guys are wondering what sort of body armor ya need to protect against a 150 GR .30-06 load?

Thank goodness I reload!
This will certainly cut down on the sound shots that the guys have been taking. If it gets much worse especially for my 9mm, I’m going to be like Barney Fife walking around with my one cartridge in my pocket.
Sportsmans Warehouse is pretty bare here. There was a group of out of staters looking for .325 wsm ammo and there wasnt any in town that they could find. That made me look around about and the shelves were close to 50% bare.
Plenty of 35 rem and 3006 at my lgs and nearby chain store
RK had one box of ww 150gr 3006......tagged at 32 bucks or so. WTH?

Rem corelokts.....17.99

Go 2 miles to another store and the win was either 17.99 or 18.99. as was the remington.

My LGS is within a buck or two.

They also get 9mm and 223 but it is gone in a hurry.

The only thing my local Walmart has is 6.5 Creedmoor. And they have a decent amount.

I'm not paying $17 shipping to get one box of ammo. I don't keep much 270 on hand because it's my brother's rifle that he left at my place. My hope is that someday he will come and get it but until then I will use it a little.
Ever since the last run on ammo, I've been a little spooked about availability. I don't hoard, but I keep enough ammo on hand to have my self covered for different needs. I've been gradually moving away form the bottom of the barrel stuff for my AR, 9mm, and .380. As for my deer gitter weapons, I've got handloads for the 300 Savage, and factory ammo for the others. At least 4 boxes for each of the other rifles, and about 8 five round boxes for my slug gun. Of course if I do a scope swap on something, or buy a new rifle, i'll make sure I've got enough to cover sighting in and hunting. I just try not to pas up .22 LR when I can find it, but even at that, it's not like I've got a whole pallet of the stuff down in the basement.
Yep gopher

"It's too late to drain the swamp when you're up to your Fart Hole in gators".....adapted.

It's TOOOO late after the spook is ON, as in now.

Some people never learn.

Yesterday I showed my son my loading cabinet; he hadn't seen inside it in some years.
There is NO room for ANY more brass, bullets, primers, or powder.
** I don't have any factory ammo** none. @@ except a partial box of Rem 35 Whelen 200s for keepsake@@

I'm NOT a hoarder, I showed him a can of IMR 7828 price $ 15.79 --> whenever that price showed up I 'began' buying a
little here and little there. So that's at least 20 years back since I started preparing.

Some people never learn.

Jerry
A qualified apology:

This thread is about "Hunting Ammo" so I was not rong. lol

I remembered I have factory ammo for my P P E for when "Stuff hits the fan".... that's diff.

Jerry
It's getting to the point that you have to buy a gun just to get some ammo!
At this point I think hoarding was called for over the last few years and I’m glad I was buying way more 22lr, propellant, and primers than I was using or I’d be screwed.

Only wish I’d have included 9mm & 45 ACPin that strategy!
Chain store at the mall, big display of rem ammo.
Was half gone laat week.
Ill pick up a couple boxes of 165gr corelokts to throw in a tub.

Did notice a dent in the .270 ammo.
I dont own one.
I am glad I stocked up a long time ago plus I reload.
Walmart shelf was pretty sparse yesterday, but still had 6 boxes of 30-06 in 150 green box CLs and 180 gray box powerpoints along with several boxes of 6.5 CM and some 25-06. It varies, and while not brimming with hunting rifle ammo, they've had common stuff in stock each time I've checked over the past couple of months including 308, 7mm-08, 7mm Rem Mag, 300 Win Mag, 30-30, 270, 6.5, 25-06 and 30-06. I've got plenty of ammo and components for every gun I own, but I always cruise by the ammo shelves of stores when I visit just to see what's in stock, shortage or no shortage. Maybe not everywhere, but seems like a little persistence or willingness to widen the net would reap a fellow what he needs to hunt for common chamberings. Anyone who doesn't have a common chambered rifle likely handloads and surely ought to have enough on hand before this latest supply shortage.
It is hard to look at empty shelves, and not think how bad can it really get.

I guess that works if your collection stays static. Mine changes and new additions roll in. I can't stock up because I don't what guns I'll be adding in the future. I have stocked up for what I had before it went crazy.

Gotta agree with this. There's no excuse for not having at least the bare minimum put away, unless you just absolutely can't afford it.
Mike

That is understandable IF you don't know what you ARE interested in getting.

i.e. I have 416 RM brass.....hoping.

Also I stopped by my local Gun Shop Wed AM.

[Linked Image from i.imgur.com]

Most, not all, common ammo was sold out.
They HAD ammo for BIG cals, eg 7 WBY, 300 WBY, etc.

Jerry
It's been pretty damn obvious from the run panic the 1 st time Oblama ran that due to political instability caused by the thought of commiecrat gun haters in charge one needs to be prepared for themselve's. Since atleast 2008 and before really. When will people learn that the day has passed that you can buy what you want, when you want, for how how much you want to pay for it? And to add if it is even available anymore? If I used Remington factory ammo, I would buy every box I could get my hands on. No sympathy for anyone who let themselves be caught short. Mb

I have no clue what guns I might own 3 or even 6 months down the road. I watch the listings and jump on whatever strikes my fancy.

Once again that is fine if your collection doesn't grow.
Yup and here is how it works a couple of springs back I went in to the local Cabelas and was checking out the used rack finding an almost new ss M7 with a 3x9 Sightron on it in 7mm SAUM $450 WITH HAGGLING $400 + tax. .no ammo in stock and could not get any thru their distribution system. Makes for a cheap buy. Next gunshow 33 once fired 300 saum brass $15. Next set of RCBS dies and shell holder $45. Found a gun shop with some Nosler Custom ammo expensive bought 1 box and no it don't shoot worth a damn fo $73 a box just damned expensive brass. Sometimes you just have to hunt like hell to find the stuff you need. Still shooting that 300 reformed into 7 saum. But when you can't work up to energy to hunt down what you need don't bitch because it's out there but you have to work to find it. 270 /30-06 etc. Is easy but no longer convenient to get if you are to lazy to stock up when it is easy. That is the way it is. MB

People who have never wanted to own a gun before are buying guns. Any gun.

Saw a fellow in a LGS buying a used Browning trap shotgun for over $1000 because it was "simple."

Makes me think a company making a bare budget side by side 12 gauge would sell all they could make.

Not sure how close you are to Eastern Ohio but I have some 270 Win if you can’t find any. I’d be happy to loan you enough to deer hunt with this fall.

Thank you that is very good of you. I actually just found 270 power points at Walmart this evening. They just got them in.

YES mike that's VERY good and we have some great guys here....some not so.

Just ordered another case of .270 today. About $1/round - not great, not terrible. I've got enough .270 to last for a while, enough 5.56 for multiple individual basic loads for my fiancee and I, and a good amount of 12-gauge. I'm shorter than I would like on .30-30, but my Marlins haven't been shot nearly as much as my other long guns lately.

This is the worst I've seen it. When .30-30 is nearly unavailable online at normal prices, things are bad. If you need anything, get it now, because there's no telling when it will be available next.
Was talking to my hunting buddy yesterday and mentioned the ammo run to him. He had no clue but he went to his basement and checked, said he has 6 rounds of 30-06 and 13 rounds of 300 savage. Said that will probably last him another decade,( and he wasn't exaggerating) but told me to grab him a box of 06 if I came across any. i bought him a blue box of 180s at the local store so id say he's good for the rest of his hunting career now, and we are only 36 years old.
This is worst than the obummer shortage

Yes it is. Things are MUCH worse with all the Libtards, Marxist’s, Socialist, & Commies
coming out of the closet OR from under the cover.

I CAN’’T believe these things have become prevalent in the USA !!!

Yes, he is a HUNTER not a Gun & or Shooting Loony.

Ain’t nuttin rong with that.

Neighbor told me about the 30/30 shortage several weeks ago, that one had me puzzled but I suppose the manufacturers are spending their machine time on high volume items and government contracts. I did find him two boxes of Core-Lokt at a small gunshop in a large beach town - guess there aren't many hunters in that town. For myself, I learned my lesson back in 1994 with Bill & Hillary's 1000% ammo tax, expiring primers, and tagnets in primers proposals. That rush on ammo and components taught me to always have adequate supplies of components and factory ammo. It is sparse around coastal NC in many shops, it comes in and goes out quickly.

Anyone with any sense would have picked up on this nonsense and done the same. Shortages since are just poor planning on the part of the guy that can’t find ammunition or components.

I started building a little inventory when Jimmy Carter was president......the “writing was on the wall” back then! Anyone “NOT” aware that this was inevitable......is simply “oblivious to the obvious”! memtb
At Sportsman’s yesterday. Plenty of 25-06 and 6.5 CM. Little bit of 308, bunch of 7WSM. 30-06, 2 boxes of Barnes 180 TSX and 1 box of Scirocco.

That's ok, the gun means nothing to him. He'd probably hock those guns to you right now and go buy a plastic stock creedmoor because there's ammo on the shelf, buy two boxes of ammo for it and go kill a toad of a buck every other year with it for the next 10 years like he'll do with whatever gun he ends up using.
I load some CF rifle stuff and have boxes of the stuff I dont.

Shotgun? I hit three stores last week trying to find 20ga bird shells. All I could find was #8 target stuff or 3" $20 a box stuff.
Finally found some #5 for a somewhat decent price.

Glad I have a few 12's to shoot! 16ga was worse.

Oh, I’ll take that punch....

My stockpile isn’t as big as I’d thought, except 22LR....
I have not found any sabot 12 gauge slug ammo here. 30-06, 30-30 and .270 no problem. My scope went tits up on my 12 gauge but I have plenty of 20 gauge so that’s what I will carry. I will zero it next year.

It's all still available up here, but it's about 30-50% more expensive that last year.

As an example, Federal Fusion 120gr, for my 25-06, are now $36 + 13% HST !

I'm still seeing green/yellow and gray box ammo at the usual $18 to $19 box for common stuff at Wal-mart. Usually a dollar more or so at Academy Sports. Premium of course, higher and likewise for less mainstream cartridges.

Actually, I was at Fleet Farm last night to get some lag bolts. I swung into the ammo section and there was 1 box of .243 bullets left. I didn't buy them because I load for it. There wasn't really much of anything left. Some .270 and .280 and 7WSM. As well as some of the bigger rounds. 450 bushmaster, 45-70... stuff like that.

This is why it is a good idea to handload. I have several hundred loaded rounds for each of 4 or 5 different calibers and if I shoot it all up I have the components on hand to load up several hundred more for each.
Until you need components during an election...
