What is always, guaranteed to be in the pockets of your hunting coat?
Extra cartridges .
Small trapper knife and fire steel
A razor sharp knife.

-Ken
Extra cartridges, small flashlight.
Some extra cartridges, headlamp, light gloves.
My father was my hunting and fishing buddy and I lost him to lung cancer in 2013. Mom had him cremated. He always shot a 7mm Rem Mag. I took one of the shells he had shot and neck sized it, leaving the spent primer in place, put some of his ashes in the case and seated a bullet. My wife made a little pouch and sewed it it the pocket of my hunting coat and i put that casing in the pouch. This way I still get to hunt with my father.

That is what you can be certain will always be in my pocket
Nothing is guaranteed...,but extra rounds, tp, license, these days my phone....ugh!
TP.

Other things may be forgotten but TP is always there.
Lint, spruce needles, the usual.
Warmer gloves then the ones on my hands!

Mike
Extra ammo and compass.
My hands.

I don’t wear gloves when I hunt.

.
Empty Snickers bar wrappers.

Great post.

2 things I'm always going to have either in a pocket or a HPG bag where I can get to them easily:

A ziploc bag with TP in it
A ziploc bag with glucose tablets in it

Neither of those things handle rain or a sweaty pocket well, thus the ziploc. Thinking about it, ziploc bags may the most heavily used non-hunting item that I always have with me when I'm hunting. I use them for so much.
Copenhagen, knife and rubber gloves.
Seems like I nearly always carry a backpack or waist pack these days, as the weather changes too much to use the same coat/clothes each time.

Always have:

TP
Compass
Flagging ribbon for blood trailing and marking locations
Knives
Gloves
License & ink pen
Extra ammo
Bottle of water
Binoculars
Flashlights
Facemask/headnet
Candy bar

Sometimes have:
Thermacell
Thermos
LRF
Thermal monocular
Green light
Handwarmers
Screw the fragile TP. 2 full size Bounty paper towels, they hold up way better to friction and humidity.

Jumbo trapper pocketknife that I always have with me if I’m dressed. Chapstick. Extra ammo, either 5 or 6 loose rounds for bolt and lever guns or an extra 20 round AR mag if I’m chasing pigs.

That’s about it for around the house, carry a small pack in the mountains with a lunch and survival gear.

Awesome idea and a.wonderful tribute to your dad.
A couple extra rounds and a few paper towels so if I get lucky can wipe off blood.
Gloves and hot hands/toe warmers. I do not keep much in my coat because it is the most transitory piece of clothing I use. Where and how I hunt means I might be taking coat off and on throughout the day. If I am glassing or sleeping in the snow for the afternoon I will probably have it on, otherwise it is rolled and attached to the side of pack or in pack. Also, because it’s moved around I prefer the zippers on the pockets.

Mountain Money and matches.
Mountain money??
I almost always carry a pack now, so my pockets: coat, shirt, and pants, are for car keys, and an extra, glasses, iPhone, extra ammo if not wearing a belt carrier, gloves, cough drops, and a Leupold flannel thingy for a handkerchief. Late in the season I get tired of the pack, and go very light on the paraphernalia, so more goes in my pockets. What goes where depends on the pocket layouts. My primary car key has an Olight attached in case I drop or misplace my LED headlamp. Two is one and one is none, as Clint says……

My backup piece is an LCP 2, and sometimes I carry a spare mag, sometimes not. Ten should be enough.
A sharp knife, TP and phone. Everything else goes into a back pack. The size of the pack varies depending on the hunt.

Hard pass on the cold wet wipe on my butthole. I gave those up when I got out of diapers and have no idea how people can stand it.
Last years crumpled up Kleenex
3 of last year's halls cough drops melted to their wrappers, which I reluctantly liberate with focused dexterity and consume individually with 90% of the wrapper removed as needed to keep old man cough and throat clearing noises to a minimal.

You've never had to choose between snow and pine cones and it shows.

I’ll choose the top of a sock over those options every time!

Usally flatten a portion of a roll and put it in a ziploc
A pack of snack crackers, flashlight, knife, a buckeye nut for good luck, and some toilet paper.

I've cut some shirt sleeves off for sure. One year, it was two weeks in a row. My wife was un-impressed. laugh

I've cut some shirt sleeves off for sure. One year, it was two weeks in a row. My wife was un-impressed. laugh

I've cut the bottom half off of a couple.
Taking inventory....in the M-65 Field Jacket....Top left pocket has a pack of smokes and a lighter.

Top right has a spare pack of smokes, some jerky in a little baggie, and a flask filled with Southern Comfort to toast the animal on the occasion of my success. The flask has gone untouched a few times.

Left waist pocket is where the drag rope, TP, and gun cleaning accessories live.

I never know what the heck is in the right waist pocket....Might be a rock I picked up, some brass I found in the bush, an antler shed long before.....

My knife, Maglight, cartridge carrier, cell phone and a Model 19 S&W are on my belt.

I carry an awful lot of crap in my coat just to go friggin' hunting. LOL
hanco has ballistic tips!
Loose shells, a drag rope my late father, braded a loop in one end, have a second one but carry the one he used.
In my pants pockets I carry a lighter, TP, gutting gloves, small spray bottle of Tink's, a flashlight and a couple Tums.
In my vest pockets I'll usually have a pair of gloves, spare mag, some surveyor's ribbon, cell phone and an English Bobby's whistle (camp tradition for starting drives).
Compass, lighter, and stockman knife. - Sherwood
Magic Mini gloves and a doe bleat can.
Don't know. Good question. I'll have to look.
Nothing but my cold hands. i use a small backpack for everything else. I keep cigars, lighter and keys zipped in the bib of my overalls and a knife in my pants pocket, everything else is in the pack.
Match safe, couple pairs of latex gloves, TP in a ziplock bag and some cough drops. Everything else rides in an old day pack.
a pair of cheaters and my cell phone
String or nothing.
extra ammo and a snack
Pocket: Compass & bag of almonds
Belt: Old Timer Mustang

Not in a pocket but a little belt pouch:
5 extra rounds
Sh*t tickets
10’ paracord
1 trioxane tab
1 BIC
6 storm match case with 10’ gorilla tape wrapped
Whistle
Mirror
Swedish Firesteel
Reading glasses
A few aspirin or ibuprofen etc
3-4 cough drops

Old habits die hard and now that I hunt way smaller country most of this stuff isn’t necessary but still mostly hunt dawn to dark and still make efforts to minimize things that would bring me out of the mountains early.
Great read...
Gloves
Couple of extra shells, TP, drag and a light nylon sling. I hunt without a sling, but keep it handy for a drag out.
Pocket knife, stuff for chapped lips. Billfold, spare cartridges
Paracord, folding knife, compass, flashlight, 6 extra shells, and a fire steel.
Folding knife
Drag rope
Pen {for filling out tags}
Zip ties {for affixing tags to deer}
Small flashlight
cartridge wallet
Compass
Lighter
Water bottle
Sandwich if I'll be out all day

Everything fits in my coat pockets. I don't carry a pack when hunting. If I had to carry so much shyt I needed a pack, I'd quit hunting and take up golf or something.
Ammo and 2 or 3 means of starting a fire.

Then you've got the wrong hunting coat. Not surprising. Most don't have enough pockets and what they do have are too small, insecure and/or poorly placed. Nobody in the group I hunt with wears a pack of any kind.
Not that my coat doesn't have 6 pockets it's that I may not wear a coat for a lot of my hunts. If its 45° degrees when I walk in at 5 in the morning and it gets to 60° for a high that day I don't need a coat, a camo hoodie or a long sleeve button up short over a tee suffices on a lot of early season hunts.

I can carry the same pack from early October when temps are warm/mild until the first of the year when Iay hunt freezing temps. I don't have to switch gear from different types of clothing as our weather changes from archery season until late muzzle loader.

Just grab the same pack.

Different temps/seasons/weather in different parts of the country may dictate how one packs.

Early here means archery season and I'll be hunting from a stand. That means I'll be wearing my vest type safety harness which has 3 large pockets per side and plenty of room for my essentials, regardless of what I'm wearing underneath it. Gun season it's usually a matter of how many layers I need under my wool mackinaw, which has enough room in the pockets and rear game bag to carry enough supplies for a week.

One of the great things about a pack is that I can put layers in it. I could put most of the "stuff" I carry in pockets but at some point I need to add/shed layers. Usually heading in before light I'm only wearing a base layer on my upper body to avoid sweating heading up the mountain.

Like 10ga mentioned, a pack makes it easy to have all the "stuff" together with no need to switch if different outerwear is worn.

A pack works well for me. Whatever works for you is all that matters.
Very interesting to see how and what others carry. I have a pack but generally don’t carry it.What I did is set up a vest that works for me. As a forester, a vest is natural already. I’ve worn a vest carrying my gear for miles through extremely rough and challenging terrain.

For the last 20 years, I e used a Filson timber cruiser vest setup for what works for me. I added zippers on the rear pack for an extra clothing layer, bottle of water, lunch, or other larger item. Always have TP in ziplock bag, compass, light (small stream light hand held and head light), grunt tube, gloves, neck gaiter/facemask, and match lock. Cartridges go in belt carrier on waist along with knife. Binos are usually around my neck but can fit in side pocket also.

This works well for me as it doesn’t effect adding or removing layers, is ready the next day no matter weather conditions. Incidentally, it can be 75 degrees here one day and 25 degrees the next. Welcome to Mississippi! If you don’t like the wether today, just give it a day or two (except summertime, it’s always hot!)
My hands, and lint.

I can take off a sweater and stuff it in my rear game bag if I need to. Normally I don't remain stationary for long when rifle hunting so I don't dress the same as a stand hunter would.

LOL. If you got more than a half mile from the road and a "drag rope" would only be useful to hang some quarters in a tree while you packed out the others on your back, you might think differently.

You should read some Benoit books. They'll show you how far deer can be dragged by actual men. I dragged one about a quarter mile last season. Took me all of maybe 20 minutes. The other two I could get close with the 4 wheeler so little dragging was needed. In the past I have dragged them over a mile. I avoid shooting them in such places today.
Extra loaded magazine, spare flashlight, bic lighter
LOL, did the Benoits ever drag any a few miles out west, without any snow or a blanket of leaves on the ground?
I’m in the pack a buck camp myself these days in the Adirondacks if it’s going to be a complete butt kicker. We drug as a kid and young man but I can just about pack a whole buck on my Mystery Ranch and walk out fairly easy.

Short drag, I’m down for that.

20 years old or so, drug a small deer a mile or so across a cut bean field with a sling or belt as a drag tool.

Told myself never again.....I have been fortunate so far.

This is where I would be if I hunted a ways from the house or truck.

On my dad's place it would be a quarter mile drag at most to the truck or if lucky I can get a tractor close.

On my place depending how things work I can get a tractor close or just have a short 100 yard or less drag.

I'm in this camp.
Only thing in my pockets are phone, lip balm, a couple extra rounds (or mag) and a can of Skoal.
Trapper pocket knife, Bic lighter, gloves, peanut butter crackers, 32 oz.bottle of water, jerky, srk knife, cartridges, gloves, rangefinder. Normally have a daypack with me.
If I'm on a quickie, buck trapper, that's it.
Hand sanitizer, toilet paper, bandana, small flashlight. Lighter. Small emergency poncho (plastic) and a Knife. Headlamp. cell phone.

I've dragged full grown bucks over a mile. I've also hoisted them over my shoulder and carried them through thigh deep water when crossing a creek. Much depends on what the terrain is like. They aren't terribly hard to drag down a valley over mostly level ground, particularly with snow on the ground. Of course they go down hill easily. If it's a bad drag I've boned the front quarters, cut the loins out, put the, meat in my game bag, tied the hind quarters together and carried them out over my shoulder.

Y’all might not want to joke around with a man who doesn’t mind dragging a buck over mile or toss it over his shoulder while he walks through thigh deep creeks. He might be capable of more than using a bunch of curse words on the internet. Grin

Says the little hippie bytch who's a kuunty, argumentative, piss ninny instigator with everyone. It's who you are Nancy, might as well own it. Nobody'd ever talk to you if you weren't exactly that. I know I sure as hell wouldn't. LOL

Apparently he ran out of it. And Midol.

Neither of those things handle rain or a sweaty pocket well, thus the ziploc. Thinking about it, ziploc bags may the most heavily used non-hunting item that I always have with me when I'm hunting. I use them for so much.

I also use ziploc bags for stuff including TP and Coleman biowipes. In the case of the biowipes, it keeps the moisture inside from getting out.
I Phone ,a small pocket knife and a headlamp. Everything else is either in a pack or bino harness.
The one thing that stays in my hunting coat all throughout deer season is a chapstick. This is because I almost always pack my coat in a duffle bag and carry it out to the stand along with my insulated bibs. Once in the stand, I hoist up the bag, and don the outer layer before settling in.. This keeps me from sweating. I seldom travel out to the stand in anything more than a sweater.

Once I'm settled in, some key bits of kit get stowed in my coat. I have a cell-phone, a walkie talkie, and my spare ammo. I want those readily at hand.

I was losing too many chapsticks, so about a decade ago, I put a stick in my coat pocket and leave it there.

Everything else like compass, knife, license, etc. All go into a possibles bag that I carry with me at all times. I used to carry a spare clip-on knife on me that I could use to cut myself out of my harness. However, I don't use climbing stands anymore.
A KitKat candy bar, a couple of Little Debbie Swiss rolls and a small bottle of water. Spare cartridges are in my pants pocket. Sometimes my coat contains some Werthers candy.

Me also, in addition to a leash when the Dog needs a walk. 😉

Please say high to all!!!!
I'll add a chapstick to my coat, I see where it's also good to lubricate zippers too.

And the dog does need to take a walk if I remember correctly.
My blaze orange vest has 5 pockets and 2 hand warmer pockets.

Cotton ball (for checking wind)
Chap stick
Wind indicator
My bino harness
Gloves
Predator call
Small flashlight
SD Card reader
When M/L hunting extra bullets and powder

You don’t even want to know what’s all in my pack. LOL
My buck tag, since it never ends up on a deer
if i stand hunt which have done alot in my home state i bring my pack in the stand with me , if i am out west i use the same pack but strap on a small portable chair . my pack has what most have posted with some 1st aid stuff too ,i carry or take this pack with always on all big game hunts , goose hunting but when i call coyotes i leave pack in truck, its my life line for me and who ever i hunt with, this pack is always with me every day. in early fall every year in my truck i put a case of water and a case of MRE`S with the heaters in them . >> my adult son hates MRE`S but he sure is glad i have them with in my truck when he gets hungry !
What is in my hunting coat pockets changes depending on where and what I am hunting. The constant item is a empty 30-06 shell that was fired from Dad's rifle. He carried it many years for use as a distress whistle and as a locater when he was part of a deer drive.
TAG
Extra shells, Folded paper towels, compass. grunt call, knife. phone. FMRS radio. gloves. Binocular. Protein bar.

This year I'm moving to a wool fanny pack. Johnson Woolen Mills made in Vermont. Wool for quiet. Will keep the protuberances to a minimum, when pushing through the whips.
I’ve got the Johnson Mills coat and pants. I was hoping the Big Woods Bucks fellas would get their little pack with shoulder straps in stock before hunting season.

The unlined wool is some darned awesome hunting gear.

Word, my good man!

Some of my Johnson Mills wool jackets and pants go back 50 years: since high school. Warm, even when wet, and quiet. I have variations in both red and green.....

Mines a bit newer but man, once you use it, for what it’s meant for its hard to go back.
A lighter, compass , and extra cartridges

Since I often use a Ruger #1 single shot, I keep a few extra cartridges, a rangefinder, my little powder dispenser to check the wind, a GPS, a game call du jour, and some tissues for those cold, runny-nose mornings. The rest sits happily in my pack.
Nitroglycerine tabs.
Paper towels!

In case I get caught short!

ya!

GWB
Rope for dragging, pocket knife, hunting license, paper napkins, cell phone with hunting/shooting applications and ammo. I used to have a range finder in my pocket, now I carry a range finding binocular.
