A friend sent me a pic of his Euro mount highlighting it's canine teeth. The deer was shot in northern Wisconsin.

That's pretty neat. I guess they're similar to elk ivories.
I've got one from PA like that, with just one "fang". I'll see if I can find a pic

Heres a mule deer with fangs. I have found one other one in the same draw just like this one
Are they nocturnal?

I've seen 2 in my life. One brought in by a customer and shot a doe with one once.

IIRC thats a recessive gene from many centuries ago.

Muntjac? still carry them.

I too have seen one whitetail deer like that.

It is a Chinese water deer Hydropotes inermis -- and I have to admit using their skulls to baffle my students in a university-level anatomy course. wink

Yup all the deer we've killed in Deep South Texas still have the tiny canines. Pretty cool throwback to those thrilling days of the Pleistocene.
