My friend and I were turned loose on two tracts of land, one was a full section (square mile) and the other was a 3/4 section. Both had some wheat and the smaller had winter canola as well. Canyons and cover on the larger and basically flat with scrub cover and some trees. We did not end up seeing a lot of deer, no rubs or indication of the rut on the full section but there were some rubs on the 3/4 and my partner briefly saw a shooter chasing a doe there.

On Sunday we met up for a quick lunch then we split up on the 3/4 section-I was on the west side looking east into a stand of Chinaberry trees that ran on a slight ridge going north and south. I had just sat down and a big doe walked down the ridge from the north end. I got the rifle ready and watched her and a buck walked down the same trail. He stopped with a decent size tree covering a lot of his vitals-if he followed the doe the next couple of steps would put him on the other side of the ridge. The shot hit a bit forward and a tick low, he jumped and ran back the way he came. He made it about 250yds and piled up under a willow near the creek. .300wm shooting a 208gr Hornady ELD M, a little over 200yds.

Dang nice buck. My drahthaar got in a tussle with a porcupine in OK on our quail trip. Kind of cut trip short as he was pretty lame afterwards. Didn't realize they had so many. Anyway, great deer you got there!

This was private, my friend from Mississippi sells crop insurance and had met these folks-they both farm and sell crop insurance. Great folks and they were nice enough to let us hunt some of their land. Besides cattle they farm wheat, beans, corn, canola and oddly enough (at least to me) cotton and sesame.

I know very little about OK, I appreciate all the input I received from folks here on the 'fire. There is public out there but we were busy with what we had to work with. There were people hunting-we heard a few shots but saw no one afield while we we there. The buck I shot is far from a monster but I was tickled, he was by far the best one we saw. I hope to go back next year with a little more knowledge under my belt.

Major county, right? Might be a couple of turkeys there, too, or so I've heard. <cough>

Gratz.

Yeah, that buck was OK but you should've whacked one of those fancy-horned cattle. Now that's a trophy!

Looked tempting, but like everything else from Africa (these are Watusi cattle) they were all spikes laugh laugh laugh
