I have a 300 Blackout and a 308win. I'm trying to figure out which one to set up for my kids to use this fall as I dont want to buy another gun right now. So i will be chopping the stock down to shorten the LOP and doing some load development. If I went with the 308 I'd probably go with some barnes 110gr ttsx and try to make a light kicking load. I already have a decent load for the 300blk using the 110gr Tac ttsx.

The 308win is a sporter barrel so can't use a can.
The 300blk is a 16" threaded, so can use a can.

I like the idea of hunting with a suppressor to save the hearing.

The 308 is a Winchester so has the 3pos safety
The 300blk is a Remington so has the 2pos safety

I'm a huge fan of the Winchester safety.


I'd guess the max range around here is 150'ish yards.

You don't need to reduce the .300BO loads, if that matters.

300 bo would be my pick, if using a can, make sure it's not too 'unweildy' for your young'n.

if you had the 300 bo in an AR, 6pos stock... fits all.

308 with a reduced load

I do have an ar in 300blk, but it's a 10". Although I'd prefer to keep it something he is familiar with. I have a couple old Tupperware stocks for Remington and Winchester so figured I could cut one of then down.

My son has been using 300blk with 125nbt. Kills deer just fine. No recoil. Can makes it so much nicer for them

I've loaded and shot plenty of subsonic loads in .308 bolt guns. Only issue is unless you get a custom barrel about the fastest twist rate you will find in stock offerings is 1/10. My Savage model 10 had no issues with 208gr bullets but did struggle a bit with 220's. The 220's grouped ok at 50 yards but keyholed at 100. Also while the groups were around 1-2" at 50 it was more like a pattern at 100.

I load the 170 Partition made for a 30-30 for my sub sonic loads, plenty accurate
