Weather is a little different than when I rode into the Minam River Lodge in mid August! Still the country is just as beautiful in winter as it is in the fall. Which trail head did you guys start form? We rode in from Moss Springs the 8 1/2 miles to Reds Horse Ranch and the lodge when we went in.

That country is Oregon's best kept secret. Spent most of my early years in Wallowa county! Great grand folks homesteaded that county! Moved away to make a living, not a lot of work there! But the best part of oregon!

Moss Springs, but a different direction than Reds...

What I would have expected. Too much foot traffic and other recreational users in the direction of Red’s. As I was saddling the mules up for ride out from the lodge I reached in my pack and pulled out my holstered Vaquero and strapped it on and my wife said one of the other guests was walking to the river behind me and his eyes about fell out of his head at the sight of the revolver. He probably ran back to the lodge screaming “GUN” once we rode off!😀 I’m sure he is back home in San Fransisco where he is a pediatrician telling his friends about his vacation to the Wild Wild West!

I grew up in La Grande and left in 1964 when my dad's job took him to Ohio. Our last mule deer hunt was in the Eagle Cap Wilderness that year. The memories are as vivid today as they were back then. Every summer we'd camp for a week on the Lostine River. I was a blessed child.
