Have a project to work up some loads for an early Marlin 38-55. Anyone have a good place to start? I have a number of old Lyman manuals and the owner of the rifle has some cast bullets already from the family member that owned this gun originally.
I have not seen the rifle yet but will update this post when I get a little more info.
Looking for low pressure and short range accuracy to keep an older family gun in the field vs any high power stuff.
Thank you in advance.

Handloads.com listed a few loads for the 38-55 that I printed out a few years ago. They ranged from mellow to potent. I have only tried a couple of the more potent loads. I can send you a copy of what I have if it's no longer available online.

I was able to see the rifle today. Its a very nice older 1893. There are some really nice cast lead bullets lubed and sized for the cases that are from an Ideal mould and loading tool.
All this is from the original owner.
Will plan on slugging the bore to get some numbers on that.

5744 works good for me in my Marlin 1893 with cast bullets.
