I've got a 56? vintage 336RC in 35 rem that needs a new buttpad. The rifle is missing most of it's original metal finish, looks more green than blue, but the stocks while plain, are in pretty good shape. It's never been drilled for a sling swivel. Anyway, it has the ubiquitous red ventilated butt pad that was installed rather roughly, and its pretty much hard as a rock. I'd like to replace it with something thinner that will still give a little bit of cushion, or at least some decent grip. I'd like to shorten LOP just a bit so I'm looking at the following which are all under .5" thick and grind-able. I think I want to keep it red or brown if I can instead of black. Looking for input on the color and if there are any models that I may be overlooking.

I'm' frankly answering this question because of a personal dislike for any legitimate, relevant question going unanswered. No expertise, but my thoughts and such applying only to the aesthetics of the gun 'presentation' resulting. 'If', the metal was yet nice, the red pad would seem attractive. The metal isn't . I'd not fret between brown and black too much. More important if fit correctly. I'd just go for the Decelerator. But your gun, your choice.

Thanks for your input John. I'm on the fence on this one and was just seeing if I could get some input that would push me one way or the other. The metalwork has a distinct patina, but I plan on refinishing with a DIY rust blue job when I am retired. I think I'll just see what I can find in stock for the best price and just get 'er done.

My old 444 has a brown pad (factory) on it, so that is the direction I would lean
