Shoot mine often. Cast and jacketed bullets.

I rebarreled a Savage 99 to that round. Picked a 1:8" twist so I can use heavier bullets in it. Kind of a modernized 22 High Power. Shot one deer with it so far using 64 gr Winchester Power Points.

I have only encountered one Marlin 336 in 219 Zipper, and the receiver was engraved. I believe it was a retirement gift for a high ranking military officer.

I've never even managed to lay eyes on one

I got a Marlin 336 SC in 219 Zipper at a yard sale in 1967 with money earned from hauling maple sap buckets and hay bales for neighboring farmers. The factory ammo drought was one of the reasons that I started handloading at age 12. I shot quite a few NH and VT 'chucks with it, using it as a single shot with 50 grain pointed bullets. I put a Weaver K4 that was laying around in Weaver mounts on it. Performance wise it is basically a rimmed 222.

There was a great article, maybe two, way back in the 60's I think. It was called Ross's Rifle, or something like that. It was in one of the big three magazines, Sports Afield, maybe. It was about a Canadian family trekking to a new place. The boy, Ross, used a Marlin in the Zipper to take an elk. Made me always want one, but never have. There was a photo of a very wet Ross and a very wet elk and rifle, as I recall. Left a pretty big impression on my teenage mind.
Congrats on a cool find.

A bit late here for the game, but just perhaps to 'play through'! smile
Aside Rem Guy, re your reminiscence... '67 I was just coming out of a long dry "gun" hiatus as finishing up my undergrad work at U.Calif. Working, GI Bill & accelerated program; seldom two spare nickels to rub together! Worse, 'ebbtide' for some few nice rifles going out the door, 'bread $$'

Much as I've admired the Model 336 genre over decades as real quality sleepers of the lever rifle industry... My .219 "R" SN prefix came to me in the late eighties principally as some less common variations picking up collector steam. On that basis, it joined my 'young collection'. Not a handloader and the off-shelf chamberings as largely off-radar for me... Generally. But Marlin lure plus 'uncommon' & good price; made it mine!
Never shot it as a number of 336 stablemates filled in for its range time absence! Happy to have it as safe queen.
Pix below & for those unfamiliar with these .291 chamberings, note pix #4. These are notably heavy barrel rifles!
Best!
John
