I have a M336 made in 1949 and I'm loading 170gr Hornady FPs. I tried H-4895 and didn't get very good accuracy. I have RL-15 but cannot find data for a starting/max charge. Can anyone with experience and/or a Hornady manual please list the starting and max charge with this powder and bullet combo? Thank you.

Start- 29.0 for 1800+ fps.
Max- 32.0 for 2100+ fps.
Loads from Lyman Book and they used the Hornady bullet for their loads.

Thanks for the info.

If you dont find what you are looking for in the RL-15, you might try H-322.

In the Sierra reloading manuel, they list 4 bullets for the 30-30. Each of these bullets list the most accurate load and the recommended hunting load (rhl). The rhl is always the most accurate max. load and is never the most accurate load. H-322 is listed 5 out of 8 times as one or the other. For the 170 gr. it is listed as both, most accurate and rhl. Just the amount of powder is changed.

I've been using this powder in 30-30's for about 15 years with great success.

.

I have used R-15 in the 30-30 for years. Try 34 gr, under a 170 gr. bullet. It's accurate in every rifle that I have tried it in. That load was published in Handloader Magazine some years ago and it works,

Also,3031 is a darn good powder in the 30-30

RE 15 is just about perfect in the 30-30.

Thanks fellas. I worked up to 33gr with 170gr Hornady FPs and got groups averaging just over 1" at 100 yards. RL-15 was the ticket.

+1 that is the load given in an old Alliant booklet. I have been using it in my 336, no problems.

I use that exact load and get 2,160 fps from my Marlin's 20" barrel. This is the closest I can get so far to the velocity of Remington 170 gr factory loads, which go about 2,170 fps and are very accurate in my gun.

R-15, Varget, and IMR 4064 are about the same burn rate and I have used with 150gr Core-Lokt and 160gr FTX. They all work great.

For 125gr Sierra JHP, I went with AA2230. I couldn't fit enough R-15 in case to compare to the AA2230(ball) powder performance.
