the new reloader has an artical about reduced loads with trail boss. i ended up with 10 gr of trail boss. my 336 in 30-30 loved it, no recoil, i will chrono them but i would say 1200-1300 fps. fun load. do not use my load figure, you need to read the artical and come to your own conclution.

Been meaning to try this.

I used the data to load my 30-30s with 165 grain lead bullet with 7 grains of Alliant Promo (Promo is the same as Red Dot, and is "only" $82 for an 8 lbs keg thru Powder Valley) and it nets me about 1150 fps. Nice load for my old take down Winchester 55s.
I'll be trying to find a .30-30 load with Trail Boss that is subsonic one of these days. Light loads are a lot of fun.
That would be a blast for kids to shoot for practice for deer season.
Unique is cheaper and works great.
The majority of what I shoot in my 30-30 are reduced cast loads. The Lee "Soup Can" bullet over a tiny splash of Bullseye trots out of the barrel at a mere 850 fps but is very accurate.

For silhouette matches I shoot a 170 grain cast bullet over SR4756 or Unique to get me 1400 fps and it is plenty for the 200 yard Rams.

My friend uses the same load in his Winchester 94 and made this a 500 yard OFFHAND shot on his second try.
500 yard shot offhand

It took me a few more tries and I used the sticks. Way fun.
