Was at a local pawn shop and they had 4-6 30-30's for sale. They were asking 400-500 for micro grooved and others that were in rough shape. What would you expect to pay for a micro groove with a beat up stock? I can buy a new 336 at Big 5 for 360 or so. Have been thinking I need one of these lever guns.

Well, you can get a new one at wallyworld for about $299. I wouldn't give over $200 for a beat up pawn shop gun.

I bought my 336 from wally world in 1997 shortly after I turned 18, I paid just over 200 for it, NIB. who woulda thought by abusing it it would double in value?

seriously MontanaMarine hit the nail on the head, couple hundred for a well used one, new ones shouldn't even be that much IMO, haven't priced any lately because mine still shoots lights out and will last many many years.

look on gunbroker for a good deal if you're looking to buy used.

Three weeks ago I paid $250 taxes included for a moderately used 30-30 336 with walnut stocks. It seems that after Oct.1st, they have gone up around 75 to $100. I guess folks have realized hunting season is almost here. In February the prices should be down again.

Around here, I typically see 336's in 35 rem between $300-$400 and the 30.30's seem to be maybe $30-$50 less. In upstate NY I do see a slight increase in price as the season nears, less so in CT.

It might just be me, but I think I would rather have an older, gold triggered 336 as long as it had no rust, a good crown and no extreme wear to finish (metal or wood) than the new one at a similar price. I certainly wouldn't pay much of a premium for a new one.

I paid $250.00 a couple of months ago for a pre-owned, but unfired, 30A in 30/30 WIN at a local gunshop. The shop had two more, a 30A and a M336 that he wanted similar money for. Seems to be about the going rate around here for a used Marlin in 30/30.

I know a guy who picked up a Marlin Model 36 for $200
at a pawnshop recently. Not bad shape for its age.

Back in 1967 I bought a new 336 35rem. at K-Mart for $67 on sale.

That would be a high price today. Rent on a nice house back then was 75-100/month. In todays dollars that would probably be $670 . Makes those $369 specials at walmart look like a deal.

The pawn shops around here are a little high on price on the used 336s. I find much better deals on gunbroker and sites like this.

I paid $339 for my used 336/.35 last fall. It's not perfect, but not all trashed either. It would probably go for less on GB.

I picked up 2 in mississippi at the pawn shops there. They don't sell to good down there but I got both for 300.00 plus tax. Both are in about 90-95% condition and shoot great.

I traded my new birch model 30/30 for a Savage 223 varmint gun. I had purchased a 1981 model with a walnut stock that I like much better. Gonna get me a older model in a .35 to replace the one I traded. I much prefer the older models over the new ones.

I expect guns, guitars, and things like that of quality brands to appreciate at 3% compounded. $67 in 1967 would turn into $239 in 2010 at that rate.

I bought a 1950 Marlin 336 in May for $165.
It should be worth $167.50 by now.

At the big Tulsa show last spring they were selling for $300 in very good condition.

Yeah. That sounds like a real deal. NOW. Not such a great deal at the time tho. To put it in perspective, the common working stiff made about $100 a week at the time (before taxes) so that $67 amounted to about 27 hours pay. And if it had NOT been on sale even the K-Mart price would have cut significantly deeper.

Fact is, considering todays prices, most guns, reloading tools and components cost less in real value than they did in the 50s-60s. THESE are the "good ol' days!"

I've picked up some really nice ones for around $200.00. The last one had a 24" barrel and it was made in 1949.

I would suspect you could double your money on it if you sold that 1950 model today.
Your forgeting the hyperinflation of the 70's and 80's when inflation was in the double digits.
I remember getting 10% interest on my CD's and home loans were up to 15% interest or more
I've seen mint conditon 1950's waffletop Marlin 336's going for $500 or more.

The last pawn shop Marlin I bought was a 336CS which came with a vintage Weaver scope for $200. The one before that was a 336CS with a Leupold VX-I scope and nice figured walnut stocks for $250.

I don't know what kind of scope it has, how many shells, if they're factory or handloads, etc. But, if it's an older one in good shape is it worth it?

I'm going to call shortly. I don't really need one of these -- I already have a Westernfield Marlin clone that was my deceased brother's, but I'll probably give that to his son. Kilt a bar with it last spring in New Brunswick. (So, maybe I do need one.)

Just gave a call. The guy says it's about 10 years old, one box of shells, Bushnell Banner scope. He hunted with it only a couple of times, and he has arthritis real bad and can't hunt anymore. Shall I proceed?

scope base on it, which is what I wanted anyway. K prefix
serial number. Wasnt really looking, just blundered into it.

I saw a nice one marked J.C. Higgins the other day for $250.00. Pretty walnut stock....

Not the best deal I've ever got on a Marlin at a pawn shop, but $220 for a 30AS 30-30.

I bought a 1949 serial number 336 (pre microgroove) 30-30 for $100 three weeks ago. OK, I lied: I felt so guilty I gave him an extra $20.

He was asking $475 for a 336 in 44 mag and $575 for a 336 in 45-70.

I don't know what he was thinking. He said he had 9 phone calls but I was the first guy to wave money at him.

He posted an ad on the bulletin board at the local grocery store. I am grateful for the great price and it shoots fine.

I went back in to the shop this week to pick up a Glenfield model 60 I found the week before and found this:

336SC 1949 30-30 for $20 less than the 336as last week.

I've got to stop going in there.

I think I figured out why he was letting it go so inexpensively. Light primer strikes, some ammo does not go "BANG!"

Two separate gun guys recommended a good cleaning (soak in kerosene, lube with a good gun oil).

A new hammer spring is also in the cards for this gun.

Any other suggestions?

Take the bolt apart and clean the firing pin @ hole.

I've recently run across a J.C. Higgins and a Revelation in excellent condition for $250.00.

I bought a very clean Marlin, scoped 336/.35 Rem walk-around at a local gun show in Freeport NY, two years ago, for $300.00. Not a super bargain but a fair price for a clean gun. Fortunately, its previous owners could handle the thunderous, massive and bone crushing recoil of the .35 Marlin without screwing up the rifle with a recoil pad.

In the Marlin forums, guys are complaining about the shoddy workmanship of the new Remlins. It seems to me that original Marlins will out pace the new ones in value just like pre-64 Winchester Model 70s or pre-CBS Fender guitars (for you guitar pickers out there).

I did experience some light hits with it even after a total breakdown and cleaning. My gunsmith friend will soon install a new spring and hanger with added washer for me.

Paid $300.00, three years ago for a stock, gold-trigger Marlin 336 with scope and mounts. Rifle was well cared for and very accurate. It was a local gun show walk-around. I'll keep this one for the count and not sell it like my first two .35 Marlins.

Not necessarily. I tried all the usual fixes on my '68 30/30 that looks like new, including a new mainspring, rear firing pin, and leaf spring. It helped but no cigar. I ordered the wrong 336 firing pin and sent it back. I think I'm going with a one-piece pin for more reliability.

I wonder if he got it fixed?

I recently stopped at a Florida pawn shop and couldn't believe the high prices. $400+ for stuff that looked wore out.
