I need some advice on a rifle offered for trade.
Marlin 308 MX in very good condition.
I know nothing about the Marlin .308 ballistics.
Help me....how close is it to the Winchester .308 ballistically?

My buddy has a 308mx Marlin stainless with a Leupold BC reticle. Very accurate rifle at 100y and 200y, have not seen him shoot it beyond that.

From what I have read it is Marlin 308 is less than a .308 from a ballistic comparison.

That's generally what i'vve been hearing.
Kinda like a modern .300 Savage.
I've got an offer of a trade for one against my Ruger 1B.
Thanks,
john

Not certain if that is an even trade option for you OR not.
I like the 1B's, the 336 XL's don't seem to shoot as well from my experience with a .270 and .338WM.

I have had a 308MX for several years and love it. I use it for deer and yotes. I use factory loads. I've shot it out to 200 yds with very good accuracy. You can get ballistic info on Hornady's website.

I suppose alot of the "range" that you can use is up to the individual. There are a few of us on Marlinowners that set out to see what we could do with them and have had elk kills to 250 and deer kills to 405 yards. I've had great luck essentially replacing my 270 with this gun. I still like my 270, but prefer that 336 action. The XLR is a more accurate version of the older 336. The Express cartridges were made for longer distance hunting and there are unique V-threads to help handle the increased pressures generated by these rounds. The rifle round itself has very little recoil and kills deer totally out of proportion to the amount of recoil it does generate. I can't imagine a more efficient round for myself. I bought one for my 11 year old son a month and a half ago. I've got him hitting steel out to 300 yards with it now. He is greatly enthused. The bullet hits about like a Nosler ballistic tip. No problem killing big Kansas bucks at higher yardages. Its all a matter of taste. Its great for some, and not for others.

I would love to shoot mine past 200 yards but that is the max my shooting range offers. The hunting land I own is completely wooded and I would never be able to see a target at 250 yds or more. So, until I can find a wide open field, I'm stuck at shooting 200 yards max. frown

The 308 ME is very comparable ballistically to the 300 Savage.
