Are Microgroove 336s known for preferring one bullet weight over the other between 150s and 170s?

I have a Marlin Glenfield model 30 (2/3 magazine with 20" barrel" that is shooting the Sierra 125 gr HP and Speer
130 SP sub one inch with CFE223 and a reduced load of SR4759. Just waiting for cooler weather to try the Speer 130 gr with Hodgdon LVR powder for more speed for the 130 gr Speer.

I have other Marlins I only shoot 170's in.

My 336SC seems to prefer 170s, but I used some 150s last year and they killed the deer dead. Accuracy is a little better with the 170s, and I might just use them next time. I wasn't especially happy with the penetration of the 150 Power Points.

Probably just my own pecadilloes, but I'd rather have two holes leaking than just one.

I load for my other rifles, but not this one. I don't shoot it a lot, so I just use "store-bought" ammo. That's where it's reputation came from, after all. And, it's cheap and available.

I'll start with the 170s. The the trajectory diff between the two is negligible with a peep-sighted rifle.

I have 4 30-30s and shoot nothing but 170s down all of them.

As far as store bought ammo goes, there is absolutely no advantage to 150 gr. bullets. The velocity figures have been "fudged" for years. Factory Win or Rem 150s only go about 50 fps faster than 170s. You have to handload for a noticeable velocity difference. Even then, I still like 170s best.....

I, or rather my rifle, prefer 170s also.

The Hornady version shoots best in my M94 Winchester.

I'm a little in the same boat. I've semi-recently acquired my first 30/30. I've hunted with scoped rifles since I was 14 and when this came along, I decided it's time to scratch that itch of heading afield with a peep-sighted something or another. Bought my dies and cases, and of everything that happened to be on the shelf of my local toy store (which wasn't a bunch), I decided on the 170gr Sierra. The comments here confirmed what I was thinking. Trajectory-wise, there's probably not any difference that I will notice in the field, so may as well go heavier. I would use my rig for javelina, and perhaps cow elk.

I've had 5 different 336 .30-30's over the years and every one showed a preference for 170's over anything lighter. That said, 150's were generally accurate enough for deer hunting within the useful range of the cartridge.

I've shot just about everything in my 30-30 336. I like reloading and for the last few years have been using the Hornady FTX 160 gr. with great results.
