I have been thinking of getting rid of my Marlin 30AS in 30-30. It is in very good shape. The serial # is 13007502 which puts it being made in 1987. The barrel has the JM stamp. It has an Leupold VX-2 2x7 scope that is as old as I am. I sent it back to the factory to have it cleaned and serviced. Any recommendations on what is a fair selling point.

A quick scan of the Marlin 30AS and Glenfield 30 on GB should give you an idea what they are selling for.

IIRC, the Marlin 30AS is the same a the Glenfield 30, a 336 with stained hardwood (birch?) stock and forearm and the front sight is installed via a barrel dovetail, rather than a ramp, that sold at a lower price. I also think that some of the Marlin 30AS have an "end-cap" style forearm, while others has a barrel band style forearm.

I recently paid $250 for a very nice J.C. Penney Model 3040, a house-brand version of the 30AS. Depending on the condition and the brand of base and rings, I would think that somewhere around $500 would be a fair price with a 2-7x Leupold.

PS - If you have a 2-7x Leupold in the VX2 style that is "as old as you", you must not be very old, as the VX2s were introduced in 2012.

IIRC, the sequence of Leupold 2-7x variables progressed like this:
Vari-X, Vari-X II, Vari-X IIc (1984-2001), VX-I & II (2001-2011), and VX-1 & 2 (2012 - current).

Thanks
260Remguy for the estimate on the rifle.
The Leupold is old the exact model says VARI-XII 2x7. It has a serial number that does not have an alpha letter in front of the serial number. This would put it being manufactured before 1974. What I remember is my father removed this scope from his Winchester Pre64 model 70 to up grade to a Redfield Wide field 3X9.Imagine that. I will have to call Leupold tomorrow and see if they can tell me when the scope was made by the serial number. I will keep you posted.

I think that Leupold will still clean/refurbish your old scope for the cost of shipping. I have several older pre-prefix Leupolds. #88911, a 3-9x40, is currently sitting on top of a Remington 722 in 257 Roberts.

Thanks for the information. Sometimes you get what you pay for with Leupold its their lifetime warranty. Great Company, wish there were more companies that stand behind their products. I just got a Marlin 336A in 30-30 from my wife grandfather it was made in 1951.It has a peep sight on the back end. I can't wait to shoot it. May have to put down my Rem 700 in 270WSM for part of this deer season. Go back to old school on them.
