Took the shorty out for a run the other day. 336Y with the 16 inch barrel. With my hand loaded 170 grain Sierras, it was still on target. Just over inch and a half at 100 yards. Clover leafs at 50 yards. This is a great little rifle for the swamps and creek bottoms I hunt here in North Florida. The .45 Colt Ruger has Hogue grips, and my 255 grain LSWC loads. Good back up if needed when hog hunting.

You might even like it with the little stock on it. I like long stocks on all my guns. All my M4 stocks come off and I put M16A2 stocks on. Rifle and shotguns all have long stocks with pads for the added length. However, the 336Y, actually fits me ok. Not as well as my 336C, but it's worth the convenience of being short.

I load the same in my 30-30, mostly because it's what was in-stock when I went to buy bullets, but also because Sierras always seemed to have a reputation for good accuracy. Plus I figure at just a tad over 2,100 fps, 170 grains of most any projectile should work just fine. I'm new to the 30-30 game and have yet to have an opportunity to take game with it, but I'm eager to get things going!

I shoot the sierra 170s in mine. Great bullet. Good deer killer. Loaded up some last night actually.

Southpaw, I load that Sierra 170 grain over 34.5 grains of IMR 4320. Chrony shows an average of 2150 fps from the 16 inch barrel. Accuracy is good, 1.50 inch or less at 100 yards. I have used this load ever since I bought the rifle in 2003. The Sierra bullet kills hogs and Florida deer pretty dang dead. I have not lost an animal.
The scope is an elderly Redfield 5 star 20mm tube. 1-4x Glass is clear, scope compares well with the stuff out there today.

Had the same thought, and by Marlin's dimensions the difference is only 1-1/2 inches. So I picked one up and ordered the full-sized 336A recoil pad, and the length comes out almost perfect as the 336 with the hard rubber buttplate. Haven't shot mine yet, it's still boxed up because I have other .30-30's right now....
Note that Manlicher's carbine has a spacer and pad added.
I have a bolt gun that is one inch short with pad. It is handy with winter clothing and the daughters like it.
Next time I see a nice JM shorty for sale, it comes home with me if the price is close to reasonable. Option two is to chop my Texan.

well I wear 36 inch sleeves. I need a longer LOP. I made the spacer out of a piece of walnut. Bought it for $265 at Bass Pro in Dania Beach FL, back in 2003

I don't have a 336Y model, but I am learning to appreciate the stumpy little guns. I've got two .22 rifles that are under 35", and they shoot as well as my longer rifles (all scoped, so sight radius isn't a factor). They are just handy as a human could possibly need. Both of mine are boltguns, neat little suckers to carry and shoot. They've got me seriously rethinking my old Long Tom Model 70 .270 24", for sure.
My 336SC is handy, but it's got the normal 20" barrel/ 2/3 magazine. Heckuva lot handier than that .270, though..........
Interesting timing on my part. Last week I ordered one of these little buggers, it should be here in about a week. Looking forward to shooting it.
Took those Sierras for a quick spin at the range a couple weeks back. Three shots at 100 yards with a peep sight and a blade up front measured 1 1/4". Thing is, my peep is bottomed out and I'm still about 5" high at 100 yards. I need to get a taller blade. Although...being dead on at 200 yards isn't a terrible thing here out west, it's the 5" high at 100 that messes with me a little.
