Soes anyone know what work needs to be done to convert a 336 in .30-30 head size to a .410? Or if you need to start with an 1895 action instead of a 336?

I know it would need a new barrel, of course. But what other parts need to be changed out or modified? I have a sound 1950s 336SC with a truly trashed .32 WS barrel (a recovered stolen gun that was stored under a porch with the barrel ahead of the half magazine in contact with the wet dirt. From the magazine end back it's a nice gun. In front of that it's a mass of pits and active rust).

Does anyone do this conversion? I'd like to try to get it close to the original Marlin .410 repeater of the 1930s.

All I can say is good thing it's not a Savage, or the boys would string you up for even thinking it! LOL.

Anybody who tries to convert a 99 to a .410 repeater deserves stringing up. Not for desecration, for pure stupid. If it could be done reasonably, Savage wouldn't have offered the 99 takedown .410 single shot option.

Mesa, my suggestion is to buy one rather than doing a conversion. I am not aware of the technical issues involved, but I suspect the 1895 is the shorter route. Best,

Didn't Marlin build some 336's in 410 gauge years ago when Winchester was building the model 94-410. Likely finding one on the re-sale market would be less $$
