All:

Was hoping that some of the Marlin experts here would know the answer to this.

I have a straight gripped 336 that I want to put a shorter LOP stock on for my son. Don;t want to cut the original stock as it is in excellent shape and want to keep it to put back on.

So, I have been looking for a straight grip stock that I can cut and likely refinish so he can use it. As you guys know, the straight grip stocks are hard to come by.

It looks like a pistol grip could probably be modified to fit but taking off the grip but not sure if it would be possible and look reasonably good.

Does any one know for sure, can I modify a pistol grip stock to work on a straight grip gun?

Thanks!

BB
You might want to drag this question over to the Marlinowners forum.

But yes, you can convert at straight to pistol grip. It takes a replacement of the lower receiver as well.

You might be able to reshape the wood to fit on the straight frame. I haven't tried it.

There are a lot of experienced collectors over at MO. Someone there has done it.
How about ordering a straight grip replacement from Boyd’s? You can cut it down yourself or order it with a shorter LOP.
As of two days ago brownells had them in stock.
Great suggestion about Marlinowners. The answer is yes and there is a guy on gunbroker that sells the lever and other needed parts.
Guys- thanks for the replies and suggestions, will checkout marlin owners.

To be clear however, I have a straight grip gun and looking for a replacement butt stock I can cut down. That is all.

Wanting to figure out if a pistol grip stock can be modified to fit a straight grip gun.

Many times the parts will fit just fine, sometimes they just don’t.

All you are swapping is the floorplate, lever, and stock. It takes about three minutes if everything fits right.
As suggested, Boyds has a straight grip replacement buttstock (Item #: 2Z14215161ZZ) for $69. Cut it down and save the original.
Yes, if you don't get a replacement, such as the Boyds stock specifically mentioned above, then you can get a pistol grip stock and cut it down to fit the straight one. I think a lot more work. Here are some examples that have been done: https://rifleshooter.com/2012/11/marlin-336-straight-stock-conversion/ (just pay attention to the stock portion of this last link and not the metal reshaping as you already have straight metal parts.) http://www.dirtydozensbunker.com/showthread.php?t=26952

Me, I would get the new replacement stock and shorten it and keep your original full size. Just my two cents.
Jim Brockman of Brockman rifles converted a 444 for me it is awesome.

Guys:

Thanks for confirming this can be done.

In this case, I would prefer to pick up one off ebay that I can cut and refinish rather than go the route of Boyd’s et al.

Will take and post pics.

Hi Blackbart, I know I'm a little late to this conversation but yes, it's very easy to convert a pistol grip stock to fit on a straight grip receiver. If you've been over to Marlin Owners you've probably already seen how to do it. I actually converted my 336 to straight grip by altering the bottom tang and reshaping the lever as well as the stock. Here's a few pics of my stock in the process of re shaping. It was eventually finished in Tru-oil.

Do what Cajun says, you will be happy.

Cajun has it right follow his suggestions. You will need a different lever, a straight lever for a mod 94, the 336 lever will not fit.

need curved PG stock......curved lower frame......curved lever
