I've decided to finally take the 336 to deer camp. Been a bit of a journey to get it to shoot well. I now realize I need a carry sling for it. It doesn't have swivels currently. I was going to snag a set of Uncle Mike's QD swivels that mount on the tube and the butt stock, but I don't want to drill the wood. I'm not committed to this swivel design, I will be carving custom mounts from metal at some point when I refinish the metal and wood. So I am looking for something quick, dirty, and cheap to attach the sling to the butt without drilling the wood. I know there are commercial slings that do that but they are more expensive than I'm willing to go with. I leave in six days so my options are a bit limited. I have a semi-formed idea using leather lacing wrapped around the butt with loop to take the sling but I haven't attempted it yet.

I generally don’t like slings. But A shotgun sling uses loops at both ends and is a temporary tool. I usually have one in my pack for the few times when a sling proves useful. Just loop it over the butt near lever and slip the other loop around the barrel

Guess I could do the same with a short length of rope

Check out the Bayou leather slings. A little pricey , but quality. Great for old leverguns you don’t want to alter.

This is what I was thinking about doing on the back end. Just don't want to put a hole in the stock at this time. But, after looking at it some more the ventilated White Line pad provides the answer. It is hard as a rock and needs to go anyway. So I punched a hole through the lowest vent towards the toe and stuck a sturdy zip tie through it and then a 1/4 steel ring onto the zip before securing it. The ring acts as the connection point for the QD swivel on the butt and I have the Uncle Mikes mag tube clamp for the front. It isn't as ugly as you would think and gets the job done for now. A leather strap may look a little better but the deer won't care.

The rifle is badly overdue for a re-blue and a refinish of the wood. When that happens, I plan on making some custom swivel bases and I may try my hand at fitting a leather cover for the butt pad if I don't do something in steel.

No need for any holes with the Bayou sling.
