Are the Model 71's made by Browning (Miroku) considered to have the "long tang" of the early Winchester 71's or are the made with the shorter wrist area?
The Brownings are not long tang like the early 71's,but the most recent 71's with the tang safety are long tangs, these were released under the Winchester brand name though.

Which would you prefer?
If I have to convert the gun to a heavier caliber than the 348? I would prefer a long tang gun, either an original or a newer version with the tang safety, the short comb guns kick hard with conversions, leaving the gun as a 348? it's a non issue.
Finding reasonably priced original long tangs is tough, the Browning is a solid gun for the price,I like them all depending on my need,I do shoot several different ones including a couple of 1886's,no problems with any.
