I've been trying different powders in my 45-70 (Marlin 1895) and was wondering if anyone had some good loads for IMR 4198?

I use H4198 behind a 405 gr. Remington, somewhere around 47.5 grains gives 1,861 fps from my 22" inch barrel. This load is fast enough, very accurate, and gives no pressure problems IN MY RIFLE! I think IMR-4198 is a little faster so you should find specific load info for it. Pretty good powder for the .45-70 IMHO.

49.6 grains of IMR work marvelously with 300s in the 45-70.

How much IMR-4198 would you use to duplicate the Remington 405 grain load? I was thinking 33 grains might do the trick.

Get a chronograph and end the doubt. Until you shoot across the screens, it's a guess at best. I'm using 50 gr of Benchmark with my 405 gr Remington FP bullets in the 1895 Marlin. Works fine - recoil is stout but manageable. Have gone to 55 gr of Benchmark -- do not recommend that to the faint of heart or small of stature.

I picked up a bunch of 405 grain hard cast bullets this weekend. I'm gonna try 30 or 31 grains.

55 grains of IMR 4198 with a Hornady 300 gr hollow point gives me 2250FPS out of my 22" Marlin. Plenty accurate for me, around 1.5 inches @ 100 yards.

48.5 with a Hornandy 300 HP works great in my Guide Gun.

Yea, those are about twice as hot as I intend to shoot having broken the wrist of an 1895 stock with similar loads. If a Trapdoor load won't kill it, I don't want to piss it off.

44gr H4198, Hornady 350gr RN = 1950fps
44gr H4198, Cast Performance 405gr WLNGC = 1950fps

Just a little fast for me, I am going to try 42grs this weekend.

I decided 30 grains of IMR-4198 under a 405 grain cast bullet shot the best in all my guns. Sub-MOA groups in all of them.

That is the charge that the gun liked, so I ran with it. Gun didnt like below or above that. Velocity runs about 1990 from the Guide Gun barrel. Shot one doe with it this fall, looked like someone jerked the earth out from under her.
