Sorry, no pics, but wow! I recently picked up a "like new", JM stamped Guide Gun in 45-70. I topped it with the only 1-5 power Leupold scope that I had, and took it out this morning to the farm for a bit of shooting. 300 gr Hornady with H4198. Got it zeroed at 100, then started shooting at steel plates at 200 and 250. That rifle shot MOA, or better at all distances!
I couldn't be happier! That is going to Michigan with me next month, along with the 7 SAUM, for sure!
Whats a longer barrelled 45-70 to stretch out some more distance? This little Marlin is much more than a brush gun. What's the next step up? I think the bug has bitten!

I've got about 1000 cast 405 gr bullets. Looks like 13 gr of Trailboss is the ticket. Gotta score some more brass as well.

My 1895, made in 1978, is also a great shooter. Think they all are. My favorite load is 43 grs of 3031 and a 300 gr Hornady HP. Very easy on the shoulder and will go a any deer. Very easy cartridge to load for, most any load seems to work well, but recoil will rear it's ugly head pretty quick.

Shot my buddies with 405 open sights. That thing was a powder puff and fun to shoot a big piece of lead. Looking at purchasing one for black bear hunting.
A hunting partner and I each own one in 45-70 and have been similarly amazed. Shooting 405 grainers and made the mistake of hot rodding them a bit. One should not do that.
Those are Tally extra low LW''s. Have since put a JM hammer extension on because it's hard to lower the hammer to half-cock with gloves on. Might not work with higher power scope and with a large objective end.
I understand the enthusiasm . I have a JM stamped 45-70 XLR stainless 24" Bbl . Grey laminated stock. Owned for many years. My primary bullet of choice is my Lyman 330gr HP mold.. Cast from scrap wheel weights it comes out at 342grs. I drive it at about 1650 fps. Very accurate & effective to 150yds. After that it starts to drop a bit too much for longer shots. All loading done with RCBS Cowboy dies. Burris 4x compact scope in old style Weaver pivot mount so open sights are easily accessed. Have never shot a jacketed bullet thru it.
I shoot 325 grain cast with gas checks out of my Marlin 45-70.
Shot some 300 grain jacketed hollow points after loading up some for a friend.
Longest shot was a hog at 165 or so yards and he did not like it at all.
My friend has shot quit a few mule deer at somewhat longer ranges.
As said hold on good if full house loads are shot,it will make a nice cut over the eye or get the bridge of the nose in a hurry.
