For those who reload either the 444 Marlin or 45/70 Govt which powders do you find produce significant muzzle flash? Years ago I loaded some Hodgdon 335 in my 444 Marlin and the muzzle flash produced by my loads was impressive. I'm just wondering if there are other powders out there that produce significant apart from H335?

The difference between Hodgon 335 and 4198 are significant in my Winchester.
With a maximum load behind the 310-Lee bullet H335 is a big white ball.
H4198 is a toungue of red fire. Spouts of fire up through the ports.
I have wanted to take a picture for years but only recently got a phone I considered good enough for burst picture.
If you are hunting on an overcast day or close to dusk I suggest extruded powder.

NEVER NOTICED IN MY 2-45-70S nor MY 405 Wn using IMR 3031. I should add all loads were cast bullets. With my Rossi 92 shooting 300-grain cast bullets using H110, don't have to wait for sunset to see the muzzle flash. It' impressive.

I managed to get a half decent pic of my nephew shooting my Marlin 45/70 today. A 300gn Speer and H335 was the magic formula.

WOW! Good picture.
I can see the fun in that at a shooing range, but when hunting?
Especially at dawn and dusk - also during a dry season?

H335 is known for that.

My brother lit up the country side one evening with his 35 Whalen. It looked like a 4th of July display.

I tried H335 in a Rem 660, 350 Remington mag.
I too get the fire ball.
I am looking at other powders.
My favorite powder for straight wall rifle cartridges is still Re-7

I reckon it's pretty hard to go past H4198 in any straight wall case.. It worked very well in my previous 444 and now my new 45/70

Never thought about flash for any reason
I use H4198 in my 444 and it drives tacks
at the range, and pokes 2 big holes in the
animals I've pointed it at
That's all I ask it to do, and it does it well.
I wouldn't consider changing anything

lots of unburned powder exiting that muzzle

i need to get a pic of myload with a 405 grain ABW on a case full of H322. That is an impressive pic and if I missed the brown bear on a salmon stream some night I still could burn him up!

My experience as well.

Never found a reason to look any further than the 4198 for my 444.
