I just picked up a new to me ‘92 in 38wcf from a buddy in Montana. It was born in 1893 according to him and while it’s not all original I love it. It’s mechanicaly very sound with a great action and bore. I went to pick it up today and give it a try. I bought some HSM ammo for it when we made the deal and it had arrived a few days ago so that’s what I used. It was a blast to shoot and while I could only shoot it 50yds I don’t think it did to bad for offhand shooting. I think I may have found a new obsession with old lever guns. Here’s a couple pics of the targets I shot. I didn’t have long to spend shooting today but I can guarantee it’s gonna get the crap shot out of it now. I’ll get some pics up of the rifle later on. I haven’t taken any of it yet now that it’s mine.

Very cool my friend! I'm excited for you... can't wait to see some pics of the new rig. I've always had a soft spot for old lever guns...

They like it when you shoot them standing up on your hind legs.

those are great old guns. My first years deer hunting in the late 1960s were with an old saddle ring carbine in .38 WCF that had the ring removed.

I'm so jealous. A unique cartridge in a great rifle.

And still a shooter!

First step down a slippery slope? Gotta love them old Winchester lever rifles. I gave my oldest son my 1913, '92 in 32-20 and have been shopping for a replacement since.

Now you’re talkin! That think is sweet! Way jealous...

Thanks man. Like I said it’s not all original, but I didn’t give all original price for it either. Either way I love this thing and am addicted to them. Now, I need to take a critter with it. Maybe a hog just for fun.

I’m glad you’re not afraid to take it out and use it... I don’t cowboy much anymore but if I did that thing would go everywhere with me...
Posted By: RenoH414 Re: New to me Winny ‘92 - 11/28/18
Nah. No cowboying here either. But, it’ll definitely get drug around the woods. I’m not scared to take it out. I just wish the damn thing could tell me the stories it’s seen in the last 125 years.

There is just something about an octagonal barrel.

I wonder how many owners it has had.

What a find!

I have a Miroku 92 in 45 Colt. I might request to be buried with it.

38-40 is a great round, reportedly John Wayne's favorite.

This '92, 38-40 is 1910 vintage, just 108 yrs old. Bore is shiny with mild pitting.

It out grouped a new Marlin .45 Colt Cowboy. Action is super slick, still tight.

They killed a lot of deer and such over the decades.

Too bad they so “underpowered” now.

I know it. The deer keep getting tougher and tougher every year. It does lack the range that bolt rifles in modern calibers now afford hunters.

Those old guys were hunters. They could get closer than half mile.

Way neat rifle. Quite the find. As you said, if only it could regale us with stories of past hunts and owners. Take some time hunting against a comfy free and drift off to sleep and see if it talks.
