I purchased this rifle several years ago and have never seen one before. It has Carbine stamped on the barrel. It is not a Mountie. How rare is it and what is the value? I am not selling it.

I've got two of those Marlin 39 Carbines. It has 20" barrel like the Mountie but a shorter magazine tube, and slimmer fore arm and stock. A very light and handy little gun.. They were only made from 1963 to 1967 with just under 10,000 units produced, Can't give you today's value, but they are pretty scarce and demand a premium over the standard 39 or Mountie versions. I've been trying to sneak up on a 39 carbine for 2 or 3 years now, & it doesn't look like it's gonna happen. Oh, I see them on gunbroker a couple times a year, but @ $750 plus, I have to pass.

Gonna be just dumb luck to find one at a shooter price. My Mountie will have to do.

10,000 is a lot 39 carbines. They are most certainly not all held by collectors. Just a nice little 22 that is among the last most owners would think of selling. Marlin should do another 10K run.

I have a 39D.. Not in excellent shape, but a fine shooter.. Just bought a 9422 ... I am.22 poor..

Try and find a nice one for under a grand.... I watch for them on the auction sites and if there is no reserve bidding usually ends up around $1200... Most Sellers will ask $1400.

I've had four over the last 6 years. Sold three of them and I think the lowest went for in the $900s. The one I have left was some sort of presentation gun as it has a high polish blue, some engraving and AAA walnut....

I love this site. I never knew they made a carbine. I bought a Mountie about 5-6 years ago.

The ONLY Carbine that I have ever seen,hangs on a friend’ wall at his home. He said that his daughter had dibs on it. Forget him selling it.

Heck, I paid $600 for my pristine 39A. And, don't feel a smidge cheated having done so.

I can't count the nice guns I've walked away from that I thought were priced a bit too high I wish I'd bought.

Saw an octagon short carbine straight stock 39M in 95%+ shape at a small show yesterday. Never saw one before.

The true carbine had a round only barrel.

GasGuzzler..what you saw was an even more rare Marlin 22 - the 39M Octagon - made for one year (1973) with a production of just over 2100 units. If you can go back and find that, its a great score. Took me years and too much money to find one. It differs from the Mountie or Golden 39M only in the octagon barrel. Not as slim as the 39 Carbine we've been talking about but a great rifle. The 39 Carbine's most recognizable feature is the magazine tube, which is shorter than the barrel. Wish I knew how to post a photos these days and I could show you a side-by-side of all three.

We were talking about the Marlin 39 Carbine, and we expanded to talking about and comparing some of the similar Marlin offerings. Here's a quick photo that I help shows a few differences.

Here's what we have...
Top rifle is the Marlin 39M Octagon - made for one year in 1973 with a total of 2140 units made
2nd rifle is the Golden 39A Mountie - made between 1954 and 1964, this one is from 1959 (note round lever)
3rd is the Golden 39M - made between 1972 and 1987, this one is from 1982
4th rifle is the 39 Carbine - made between 1963 and 1967 with a total of 9695 units made. I have a 1964 and a 1966 (note round lever and shortened mag tube)
5th rifle is the shortened (16") 39TDS - made from 1988 to 1995. I have several of these.
6th rifle isn't a 39 - it's an 1897 Texan with a 20" Octagon barrel - made only in 2002 & 2003
7th rifle isn't a 39 either, but an 1894M in 22 magnum - very few made between 1983 to 1988 with 12,088 units made, but very hard to find. This was a first year gun.

Hope this helps to clarify some of the original Marlin rimfire offerings.

20" octagon barrel

Don't remember ever seein a 39 Carbine until Sunday at Cabelas/BassPro in the used gun rack. It was marked well less than any Mountie or 39A I've seen in a good while. Couldn't find a thing wrong with it so I took it in the gun room and asked if they had any wiggle room on it. (Never hurts to ask) He came down $20 bucks on it so I started the paper work, I was goin to anyway. Fetched it home for a grand total of $416.09. I bout swallered my snuff when guys were tellin me how much they usually go for! It's about as sweet a little 22 as I could ask for, and shoots real well for open sights and nearly 66 year old eyeballs.

What do I have here? Middle rifle is a 94-22 XTR. I paid $200 for that rifle at least 20 years ago. The ones on the left and right are 39's with 20" barrels and straight grips. One of them SN AC281XX, says Marlin Golden 39A Mountie on the barrel,

The other SN P24XX simply says 39A on the barrel.

Both the Marlins have their share of character marks, but about what is to be expected from 50-60 year old rifles that have been used. I paid under $400 for each of them about 10 years ago.
