.300 Sherwood Load Data - 24hourcampfire

Does anyone know a good source of load data for obsolete British sporting cartridges?

I've recently purchased an old Westley Richards cape gun chambered for 28 ga. and .300 Sherwood and can't find any specifics on the .300 Sherwood loads.

Bertram still makes brass, but I haven't any idea where to start with regard to bullet type or weight nor powder types or charges.

Any info anyone can offer would be a great help.

Why is this in the Upland game forum???

The firearm is suited for upland game and that is the hunting that I intend to use it for. I was hoping that there might be someone on the forum using an old rook rifle chambered for this cartridge for the same purpose.

The round is listed in Cartridges of the World 10th edition. There wasn't specific load information other than factory load was a 140gr lead bullet at 1400fps. This round was introduced in 1901 by Westley Richards for use in Martini actions and Sherwood target rifles. Sorry there wasn't more useful info for you.

If you have access to an index for "Handloader" and "Rifle" magazines, I believe that there was an article in the fairly recent past (10 years or so) on rook rifles which mentioned loading this ctg. Probably by Ross Seyfreid (If that doesn't work, try searching Seyfried--I never could keep those ei and ie bits straight...).

Article referred to above is "Of Rooks and Rabbits, Mice and Men" by Ross Seyfried on pp. 28-35 of Rifle #192 (Nov. 2000). Description of the uses of the .300 Sherwood (medium and big game as well as rook and rabbit, apparently) but not much load data. He had a later article on Martinis that dealt with the .310 and .300, I think. I'll look for it when I get a minute.

The other article is in Rifle #199 (Jan. 2002) on pp.38-45: "Little Rifles, Long Range" by Seyfried. Covers handloading and shooting .310 Greener Cadet and .300 Sherwood at (very) long ranges.
