Life and old man winter got in the way of our South Dakota pilgrimage this year. So we’re planning to head up to my old stomping grounds in Kansas in a couple weeks to look for some roosters. Primarily around Dodge City but we can go further if there’s good reports. Any of you guys having any luck this year?
I just spoke 10 minutes ago with a good friend from Woodward OK who guides around Liberal. He says it's mediocre. There are some birds but not so many. Hunters are getting birds, but they work for them. He'll get you as many as anyone and more than most. It's the same near Dodge City where he hunts.
Well we’ll walk our butts off and eat pickled eggs and baloney sandwiches on the tailgate and have a good time at any rate. I might stop in Woodward on the way up and try to do some horse trading on a new used shotgun that I’ve had my eye on for a while now. Thanks for the heads up Luv2safari.
I guess you know who to call there. wink

Tell him he's a darned gun thief.
We’re headed that way the first week of January. Plan to start around Pratt and head west. Got a bad report from a farmer we know in Greensburg. Reports we’re getting from west of Liberal are similar to what luv2safari said. We’ve had a few good reports on quail numbers.

I've had mixed results on 100% public land. This for roosters. Seems like a bit of a down year compared to last two but nothing better than stomping a few miles for pheasants. Have fun!

A couple of weeks ago I walked 14+ miles in a day and a half, wore out a 4 year old GSP and managed to kill 8 roosters and 6 quail from a combination of public and private land. Lots of hens and the birds are widely scattered. But with a good dog, some good shooting and a lot of walking a guy can fill his limit. This was west of Dodge City. Mickie the wonder dog and I are headed back the day after Christmas for a couple more days of fun.
Good deal and thanks for the reports. I haven’t hunted KS in 13 years, used to go to Minneola 4 to 6 times a season and tear them up but I know the drought took a toll on the pheasants. I’m sure all the old timers who used to let me hunt have passed on by now but I’m never opposed to knocking on doors and making new friends. I bet we’ll both walk our butts off as well as have a good time.
I just got back from a north central trip for deer (unit 2-3) Mid day pheasant was almost a waste of time, it is a waste of time but no hunting qualifies as that ! Any way the quail were OK Saw about 50 pheasants in a week or so, not long ago it was 50/hour average. we got two roosters in 10 days, should have had 4-5 Almost none seen in farm yards/shelter belts, none heard going/coming to roost while on deer stand. It was really sad
