Been doing some ponderizing and note comparing, and it seems that if a person loads a bp cartridge with 35% of the blackpowder charge of 5744, things seem to work out pretty well.
For example the 45-70 with 500ish grain bullets 25 grs of 5744 gives nearly the same velocity as 65-70 grs of 2f.
Same goes with the 40-65, and others I've loaded with 5744 when I'm feeling to lazy to clean cartridge case. Just figure how many grains 35% of the blackpowder charge would be, load that many grains of 5744 , and go have a good shootin session.

35% by volume or by weight? I measure my BP charges for BPCR by weight but for my ML's by volume. Just want to make sure . . .

By grain weight. Any idiot sumbeech that speaks of powder charges by "volume" is so low in the human intelligence ratings that serious consideration should be given as to whether or not such person should be allowed around firearms without adult supervision, and a possible ban from being in the presence of arms and ammuntion.
So, what yellow powder measure do I use?

Ranch-

In the appendix of Dangerous Game Rifles by Terry Wieland:

"it's ideal for low loading-density applications such as reduced loads in low performance "straight case" designs, such as old black powder calibers such a 45-70, 45-110, 50-110, etc."

And, "it makes ideal reduced loads in any caliber by determining the max charge per volume by filling the case to what would be the base of the seated bullet and multiply that by 0.40." That's your load of Accurate 5744 for a consistent low vel load.

It is also reputed to need no filler in these low-density loads and burns consistently no matter it's position in the case. I'm using it now in my 45-70 with 405-gr hard casts at about 1300 fps.

GDV yup 5744 am good stuff. I shoot several pounds of it a year. I do find it works better in 40bore and up, than it does 40 down.
I have not used any filler until the other day when messing with some 400 gr snovers intended for the 40-65, in the 405. Was messing tying to get them to group with not much luck they were just a touch undersize. Then I recalled a fella on another board that uses quite a bit of 5744 saying that he used a 1/4 toilet paper square rolled up and stuffed on top the powder. So I decided well why not. Presto groups came in respectable, and after I figured out that 38 type sight didn't need to be all the way up to shoot the 800 yd target , we started ringing the bell waaayyyy out there.
I have used waxchecks quite often with 5744 especially when shooting really soft bullets.
I like the stuff quite a bit, and always kinda figured that the folks whining about the old maid kernels it will leave behind are probably pretty much girlyman shooters anyway.
