In my quest for shrinking groups in the BPCR's I shoot, I tried some .030 Walters Wads. Dang!! My groups really shrank! I shot a five round group this morning that had 3 shots touching. At 100 yards! I know my less-than-Camp Perry ability didn't improve that much overnight. What's the theory behind the wads that improve accuracy? I'm looking for any accuracy advantages I can find. Is more better? NebrHogger,

That's good shooting! I'm a relatively new BPCR shooter, but I've been amazed at how accurate they are. You don't say what you were loading before going to the .030 Walters wads, but an over powder wad is pretty standard when loading BP cartridges with lead bullets. My understanding is that their purpose is to protect the base of the bullet.

Paul,

I'm shooting a 10.4X47R Vetterli and am using the RCBS dedicated heeled 300 gr bullet. The original military load was 62 gr of FG black. I had a couple pounds of Pyrodex CTG and worked up a load of 53.0 gr which clocked 1425. It was good for a 5" group @ 100 yards.

As discussed here previously, Mrs Hogger objected strongly to the smell when I cleaned the brass and I believe it was Cat who suggested 777. 49.0 gr gave 1550fps and about the same size groups. Peace and domsetic tranquility were preserved!

I needed some other stuff when I ordered from BAC and tried the wads on some one's (?) recommendation. The groups shrank to 2 1/2 - 3", and the group was repeatable! I'm amazed a trivial change like wads would make that much difference! Did I mention I have little experience in BPCR?

Any other accuracy-enhancing tips? I"m turning into such a BPCR junkie, I just cast bullets for 2 hours, and it ain't exactly cool today. Dang! This stuff is fun!! The pics of the target & rifle at the range are in the computer, but hunt101 hasn't enabled upload yet. SW

I don't have a quick and dirty URL, but do a Google search for Introduction to BPCR Loading by Chuck Raithel. It is a free downloadable how-to manual by Chuck, aka Coydog. Lots of good info.
