New to me 05' with a 5.9L. 4x4. Never owned a diesel before and am going to drain all the oil etc.

What brands do you folks here prefer? Always been a Valvoline guy myself. But I'm interested what others prefer.

Thanks everybody.

IMO - oil means less than good filters.

Delvac was one that always did well when I was at Pete. When I was with the carriers - Mobil 1 or Delvac again. That said - I'd not shy away from Amsoil either.

Still - find the best filters you can and change them often. UOA will be your friend and with that - remember, a single data point is not a trend. You'll need a pattern of returns and changes to determine what's happening.

I've seen brand new (first or 2nd oil change ever) UOAs come back with high numbers that freak people out but they just never change and the engine runs forever. It's the change that can be more important than the absolute number (within reason) and you see change over time.

If you stick with valvoline, go with the premium blue, full synthetic 5w40......

While I tend to run Rotella in diesel engines, both posts above are spot-on.

Rotella 15-40

Over a half million miles on my 2 Cummins trucks combined, 300k on the '03, and 208k on my '14, all with Shell Rotella 15w40. Oil changed every 7500 miles and fuel filters and every second oil change. Never had any internal engine issues with either, or oil consumption problems.

Just brought a 2023 2500 home this past weekend, and it requires 5W40 full synthetic oil. Going to go with Liqui-Moly on this one.

I like Rotella.
It and Delvac are what you will find in most semis.

Let's be real here though.
Oil is science, not hocus pocus magic.

There are set standards, most oils meet them and are marked to show it.
Good filters, proper changes.
That's all the manufacturers require to honor the warranty on engines costing
$30000 or more.

Unless you are going to run a fancy filtration device and extended intervals,
the fancy oils will give you 0 returns. About equal to putting 93 octane in your
econo car. It's better, but it's not better for you.

the 15/40 dinos are fine if you live in a mostly warm climate........

if you live where it regularly goes sub zero or hovers around zero....10 for weeks at a time , you will find that a good 5w40 synthetic will allow your engine to crank much easier , along with quicker oil pressure on cold starts

Another vote for Rotella - I run 5w-40 in my '07 5.9

I have run Delo 10-40 in all my diesels from present 1983 Ford International, to 2000 Dodge Cummins, to highway class 8 diesels. Call a dealer and ask. Celo 400 10-40 is formulated for diesels.

400,000 miles on my 99 dodge/cummins with shell rotella 15W-40 and fleetguard stratopore filters every 7500 miles. Delvac's fine too as is Chevron Delo 400. Take your pick.

Delo 400, and good advice on the fuel filter change every second oil change . Have always used Wix filters.

I run rotella t6 and Cummins filters.

I use Delo 400 15w-40, and fleetguard filters. I buy oil and fuel filters from Genos Garage, online, a dozen of each at time. Change both every 5000 miles. 2006 with 255,000 on it.....original fuel pump and injectors, getting 18 mpg. I had 502,000 on my 1991 Dodge, when I sold it, and it was still a solid truck.

I add diesel kleen fuel additive at every fill up, and plug the block heater in, when it gets below 40f. I'm sure both adds life to the engine....
