Over the years our family has always had two vehicles. One was pretty new while the other was much older but still somewhat reliable.
Mostly both the wife and I worked outside the home. I always felt better with her having the newest vehicle, I could not imagine her on the side of the road with mechanical problems or putting my kids at risk. I never felt embarassed by driving the junker and figured if something did go wrong with it I'd rather be dealing with it than the wife.
Even now with the kids all grown she still drives all the new vehicles while I'm still content with the second hand stuff. Today she's driving a 2003 Toyota Highlander, while I'm putting around in a 96 F150 with 125,000 miles.
So what's your arrangments ?

The wife has a 2001 Surburban wath all the goodies and I have her old 1995 Toyota Camry with 140,000 miles....Sounds like we have the same arrangement...

It was always me that drives the junker, i.e. a Geo with 180k miles on it, a 63 C10, a Subaru with 216k miles on it...but I just went out and got me a 97 Ranger with only 36k miles on it.
She's got a 97 blazer with 100k miles, which is still pretty nice.

Ha! I can top that. My away-at-college daughter drives an '89 Ford Tempo with 170,000 miles. OOPS, no siree - that's what I drive. Her car is such a piece that I can't in good conscience let her drive it.

She has my Jeep, and I have her Tempo...sigh.

I'm not even married yet, and its been determined, her newer minivan gets replaced before my truck. I guess its a good thing I like my truck (96 Nissan with over 100k). Her minivan is a 98 with about 70k.

Every thing I've got doubles in value when I fill the tank. An 86 Taurus, rescued from the junkyard when the tranny started slipping. I changed the tranny filter and fluid, and got it working good, but it's still got 3 wheels in the junkyard and one on a bannanna peel.

A 91 Grad Am, or should I say Grandma? It needs some work on the EFI. Gets about15 MPG while running a top speed of 45.

An 86 Ranger. I rebiult the 4 popper when it swallowed a piston a few years back. It runs good, but the boy has been using it for a dent collection since I got a good truck. The hood, tailgate and rear corner on the drvers side are still straight. Runs too good to junk, but looks to rough to sell.

I love those older Ford Rangers. I have had a couple friends drop 302's (& one 289) into them and fix'em real nice. For surprising less cash than you would think. Had one buddy who was determined to drop a 4.9L I-6 into one when I was in the Navy, he got transfered to the other coast and we heard little from him after that so I don't know if it fit or not. Someone told me years ago you could buy kits to swap big blocks (429/460) into them. Don't know if the kits included logging chain to tie it down with! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Had a Buddy with a 78 Mustang II that shoehorned a '29 in there. That thing was WICKED.

I'll stick with the V6, as I have no desire to re-arrange the 4WD.

88 accord with blown engine; headed for junkyard
78 fairmont with only 80,000 miles but a broken valve spring so it is parked; no bread to fix it right now
98 escort with 150,000 or so; sounds like the top of the engine broke something two months ago; parked waiting on fix-it money; car still looks too good not to fix it
99 wrangler with 112,000; bent tailgate; plastic windows getting a little scratchy and dim; valves clattering a bit; just replaced the power steering pump; but looks and runs just fine; this is my wife's vehicle
00 cherokee with 85,000 or so; needs new front brake pads; right rear wheel is slightly bent thanks to wife's trip against a big drain culvert so it needs 8 ounces of wheel weights; but other than that looks and runs super fine; this un's mine.

Wife has the 2003 Focus. I have the 1988 GMC S-15 with 145K on the odometer. There's an '87 Cavalier wagon in the driveway as a backup. Inspection's up at the end of March: it'll prbably be retired then; we kept it this long because it was something for the sons to drive, but they've got their own rides now.

Yes for the most part she has or should say had the better vehical, now we kind of spliting the vehicles depending on who had to drive the farthest, She now drives about 3 or 4 miles I drive a little over 25 miles to work so I take the Beetle 1998 95k miles, she was driving the 1989 Suburban, Was being the key word, she is now relying on taxi service to get her to work and I usually pick her up.



We live in a small town it's only $2.50 door to door. Actually cheaper than driving the Suburban every day.



I just bought my parents 1988 DeVille, that's still in TN. Waiting for the weather to break so we can get it.



And I have my 1982 CJ7, I try not to drive it in the winter if I can avoid it, This is my main summer vehicle while she drives the Bug.



So we have no shortage of vehicles to drive, but do need to get the Caddy home.

Who else? ME, wife has a '99 Blazer LT 4X4. I just junked an '86 Blazer 4X4 with 280,000 on it and now have a '90 Plymouth Sundance RS with 98,000 on it!

My son drives the junker in this house.....well not really drives he is too young to drive but he owns a Honda CRX of no fixed year. It was given to him by his uncle last week. This CRX has been rebuilt and patched so often Im not sure that Honda still wants their name on it. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />

AS for the rest of us my wife drives a 2002 Sebring.

2003 Chevrolet Z-71 LT Extended Cab/Short Bed, every possible ortion and the 5.3 liter engine. Fold-A-Cover tonneau and Viper Liner. So far, 7,500 happy <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> miles.

2004 Tahoe LT with every possible option. Bought it a week ago and it now has 103 miles on it.

The wife drives a 2000 jeep cherokee with 43,000 miles. I drive a 1986 delta 88 with 21,000 miles that was given to me by my friend, and for hunting or towing we have a 2003 GMC sierra. Until 2 years ago I never owned a vehicle newer than 10 years old.

Wife drives a 97 Toyota 4runner with about 70,000 on it.
I've got a 97 Dodge ram 4X4 with 85,00 on it. Guss we're about even, 'cept I'd trade her in a heartbeat!
We bought 'em both new, just a few mos. apart...Wish I'd have bought a Toyota also.

I put my wife in a new Honda Accord about every three years since I don't want her having car trouble on the 4 lane. Up until August I drove a 1987 4 X 4 S10 all the time. I got her a new car in July and I made a deal with her. I convinced her to let me buy a new full sized GMC 4 X 4 Extended Cab Z71. Man after driving that S10 for so many years I thought I had went to Heaven when I took off in that GMC. Being that I am 6' 5" I felt alot better and safer in that new truck. It will have to do me for another 15 to 20 years. By the way I kept the S10 to drive down on the farm and for the rough places.

I drive the junker. It's a 99 BMW M3. Fast and fun. It's lousy to hunt ouf of however. Need to do something about that. Momma has the new car - 04 Mercedes C36. my wife of course drives the new Toyota, my son has the old Tercel with the salvage motor in it (so 50,000 on some of the car, 240,000 on the rest), me I drive an '88 Specialized Rockhopper 21-speed with the ancient polymer-style sprung fork ) My OTHER ride, a '96 Saturn Station Wagon (185,000 mi), is currently up on the lift in at my high school awaiting a salvage motor, to be intalled under the tender mercies of a typical class of auto-shop delinquents (none of whom have any reason to dislike me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />).

My other OTHER ride is a '92 Kawasaki KLR 650 that sit patiently gathering dust in the garage, fires up every time though.

"Ahem"... those who pronounce anything on four wheels "fast" generally have little experience with motorcylces. "Fast" can be gotten in an automobile, but ya generally have to pay about as much as I did for my house for it.

Junkers, I have a yard full of them, my daily ride is a 90 f-250 Ford 4x4 diesel 250,000 miles on the clock, parked out in the back fourty is my 88 Eldorado with a bad transmission, this one is headed for the Goodwill after 280 thousand miles, Then there is the Guzzler my 1972 Ford F-250 with less than a 100,000 miles, by just a hundred or so, this is the lowest mile rig I have, Next would be my Isuzu trooper of 86 vintage, the million dollar rig, with a quarter milliom miles on most of it. at least thats the estimate of the past repairs, Next is my wifes 84 Dodge Intrepid with 260,000 miles this is her back car she also has the Money pit a 88 BMW 325I milage uncertain as I never get in it or drive it. All vehicles look good except the lousy Chrysler paint on the roof of the Intrepid or actually the lack there of. All combined we have over a Million miles on the cars in our yard. Lets see at 25 cent a mile I coulda paid off the house a couple times over and bought a new Dodge or Chevy Diesel with all the goodies. We drive a lot of miles between the two of us it is 140 plus miles a day too and from work. I buy low milage used rigs and drive the wheels off them. Then there is the boats.......

Wife drives either a 98 suburban or a 99 z34 monte carlo. I drive a 86 toyota 4 runner 4x4 with 240,000 on it. And either one of the chevys is out of the question unless she is in it with me.

Mine is a Giant Rincon - what we used to call a mountain bike back in '91, when it was new.

I ride my bikes 20-30k miles per year, just for work travel, when I only need to take clothes and my laptop.

My other 2 wheeled ride;

I also have a 2003 GMC sierra ext cab z-71 with about 17000 miles on it. My 1963 Thunderbird Landau edition has only 48,000. As soon as I get that T-Bird sold I am off to the Harley dealership to get a V-Rod

Wifeypoo drives a new Hyundai Elantra GLS. At least it was new a year ago and now has 37000 miles on it. She commutes to work and it's 50 miles one way. I have two, actually three, alternates. I work a part-time job in the early morning feed about 600 head of dairy cattle from 4 am -8 am +/- M-F. For that job I drive what's affectionately known as "the manure car", a '92 Hyundai Elantra with 136000 miles on it. If I'm trying to go someplace and smell better when I get there, my next car is a 2000 Hyundai Elantra wagon with 82000 miles on it; my wife's former car. When power, hauling or camping is the goal, the '99 F-350 SD, SC dually diesel gets fired up, and this one has about 63,000 miles so far.

We try to get the wife a new car every three years, since she puts so many miles on per year. She's very mechanically handicapped so like many of you I try to make sure she has something that will give her zero trouble. The Hyundais have been good cars and cheap rides, important when living in such a highly taxed state as WI.. The 10 year/100,000 mile warranty does wonders for peace of mind also.

The wife, however, likes to drive newer vehicles, and the last one is the first van for her. Until the kid's, she always drove really classy rigs like cobras and New Yorkers, now she drives a mini van. I think the next one is going to be snazzy again, though.

We have a 2002 HD Dana Glide sport, she has a 1997 Kawasaki ZL 600.

My wife's got a 2002 Dodge quad cab Ram with only about 20,000 miles on it. I drive a '92 Nissan Sentra with 230,000 miles on it as my comuter car to work. I have a '93 Ford Escort that I drive when the Nissan is broke down. I also have a '93 Chev K2500 w/ 6.5TD that I use for towing the boat and put the camper on.

So.....2 junker cars and two pretty decent trucks for our household.

I drive the beater-a 90 Blazer (the little one) with 180,000 on it. Several reasons why: 1) I could care less what I drive, as long as it starts when I need it to. 2) I'm not out to win any beauty contests, and I don't want to have to worry if I get a scratch on it back in the woods during deer season. 3) We just can't swing 2 car payments, because if we did, I wouldn't have any fun money when I'd find a deal on another gun. 4) Last but not least- I'M CHEAP! I refuse to spend 20 to 30,000 dollars on a truck, heck, we don't even owe that much on our house!

I have a camp in New York and one on the Canadian border in N.H. That adds up also. I did an exhaust just yesterday when I should have been out shootin at the range. I do most of my own maintainence on it. Anything electronic I need to have someone else do. I do the oil and grease every 3000 religiously, but seriously, I have been lucky. It ain't much to look at, but it gets me where I need to go. No matter how cold it gets, it starts. My wife doesn't drive a standard shift, so all of mine are standard hers are automatic. Anytime we travel together we take one of my vehicles.

so, LBK - no special lubricants or metal treatments? Your stated maintanence schedule looks like mine. The expensive repair I mentioned was mostly my fault (didn't keep the automatic hubs properly lubed).

Just had the valves adjusted, and the mech said that the insides looked spotless. With only 157,000 miles, maybe I can consider it a young car! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Hope so, 'cause I have been quite happy with it, for the most part. Most 6 cylinders wouldn't even make it that far. I'm not happy with what we call progress. With all the electronics and computers most breakdowns are costly. But I will say this, that todays engines (if you get a good one) are like Timex watches. They'll take one heck of a licking. John Cameron Swayzee would be proud. This is a fun thread. Like many of you I have the unker. My wife wanted a minivan and in May of 2002 she almost littereally walked my down the street to the local Kia dealer and said I want that one. It's been a surprisingly good vehicle so don't laugh too loud and that 10yr/100K warranty is the main reason. w did have some work done on it. Like the self ratchetin rear seatbelts tend to get sprung buy the little ones car seat.(bummer since this is what they were made for...se warranty. And the was one recall type issue that was required. Other than crappy gas milage it's been great and it's nice to drive. Now for my car.

1997 Dodge Intrepid ES 3.5L_ I love this car almost as much as i loved my 69 Charger with 440 Magnum. we have had to do some work on this one too and it needs the struts all cahnged ad a tune up as it has over 150K on it. Oh yeah this is my hunting and shooting vehicle too and the one I was using to make 1500 mile round trip business runs. I bought it a year old with 58K cause I knew the car was good and the miles were easy. It needs the roof painted as it was starting to go and i had a carwash do a "handwax" and the guys used a buffer and buffed off 70%of the paint. Couldn't really blame them though for the damage.

What I want is as new as I can afford Dodge Durango SLT 4x4 probably an 02-03 after I get myself set up with a new gig.

Every day I swear this will be the last, but it just keeps on going. It was running poorly a few months ago, but it WAS running. I am a firm believer in "if it ani't broke, don't fix it." There's a lot of good AND bad in that thought train. One day it was really chugging and bucking. My WIFE say "when's the last time you did a tune up?" For the life of me I couldn't remember !! I put plugs, rotor, wires, and a cap in and it runns like it just came off the lot again. It's inspection time now and I put a muffler and tailpipe on. I noticed I still had an exhaust leak and found that the 02 sensor where it is welded to the crossover pipe is the culprit. I hope they don't spot it in the inspection because I'm not looking forward to that job. RUST???? The tailgate is shot on the bottom, but the window still works. Doors have some serious surface rust, but NO HOLES. Floor is great, but that's only because of the oil leaks. Don't laugh, it gets me back and forth to work and in the woods, rocks see me coming and THEY move. I screwed up a few months ago on a rainy afternoon on the way home from work and rearended a Mazda. I have a push frame on the front of the Bronco and it darn near totaled the Mazda (18mph) and never even broke the plastic grill on the Bronco. No one was hurt fortunately.

Hers: 1969 Pontiac LeMans, 400, rebuilt by me, auto, everything new or rebuilt except the differential.
Mine: 1976 Chevrolet Silverado 1/2 ton, 350, 4 speed. I won't own anything I can't easily repair myself. 1979 was the newest rig I ever owned. Sorry, no junkers. I did pick up a 1974 Chevy Blazer, not running but complete, for $100 but it is a rust bucket. I'll part it out and make a few hundred dollars.

Our ideas are pretty much the same. Wife has a 2002 Honda Accord with 53k miles on it, and I got a 1994 Grand Cherokee Laredo v8 with close to 164K miles on it.

Like the other post, I rather have my wife drive the newer car with my two young'uns in it and hope she gets to her destination.

It's not a junker, 1973 Ford 4x4, 206,000 miles +. Hauls horse trailer with three horse, doesn't burn oil and doesn't rattle. Grandson rolled it this summer, tipped it back up, replaced the door and top and we are going strong. Mom has a 1998 Ford Expedition, like new.

I guess I go against the grain somewhat:
I drive an '02 F350 Powerstroke w/ 45k miles
Wife has a 95 Mustang with about 106k miles
The Cherokee I never sold (good extra car for whatever) is a 94 with 166k miles. Was going to sell it after buying the truck but never got around to it. Though now the wife is talking about something new (likes the Hyundai Santa Fe and Subaroo Forester at the moment <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif" alt="" />) which has to be kid friendly since she's pregnant. If we didn't have a little one on the way the next car would likely have been the new new model Cobra or T-bird. I wanted to sell off some investments and go for the GT, but that's not an option right now. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
