Howdy all,
Does anybody know of any forums discussing this subject? I'm looking at upgrading my old 7.3 diesel, but I want to hear about the new diesels from real owners. My wife likes the quietness and lack of "stink" from the new ones. Thanks,
Greg

You have opened the can again!

I just installed a Rancho 4" lift on my '02 2500 HD 4x4 DuraMax/Allison along with Real Lift Torsion Bar Relocators. I have also added a 125 HP/350 ft lb chip, a lift pump, secondary fuel filtration, a better muffler, Amsoil air filter in a modified airbox, and run an additive. My truck has posted a best of 22 mpg empty on the freeway and will do 0-60 in less than 6 seconds.

I obviously like my DMax, but the new Ford and Dodge are good too--it just depends on what features you like best.

BTW, our Webmaster has a Dmax, and one of our most expert PH/Guides/Hunters has a new Dodge.

This past year I FINALLY got rid of my 95 chevy 2500 4x4 ext cab long box 6.5 turbo diesel and got a chevy 02 2500HD 4x4 duramax/alli trans crew cab long box and haven't looked back.....that trans is a work of art......it is so nice not to have to worry about fuel pumps and lift pumps, even if it was under warranty......Boots

Boots,

I think you should worry about fuel pumps and lift pumps. While our engines out very stout, the injection system needs clean fuel with good lubricity. We don't have such fuel in America. It is a good idea to run a good additive, a secondary fuel filter, and a lift pump.

Blaine,

got my Banks 4" Monster exhaust installed (Sounds tough) & have my TST PowerMax box on the way. (Wanna race? )
The box is capable of more than a stock tranny can stand (553 lb/ft & 184 RWHP increase) so will have to run it on a milder setting until I beef up the tranny...........

Thanks Guys. Any problems to date with YOUR trucks? Are aftermarket mods necessary to keep them reliable? About 8000 lbs. is the most I will normally be towing. I have to start my research all over again since everybody has updated their drivetrains. Right now it's down to the powerstroke and the Duramax. I like how stoutly the Ford is built, but the wife likes the dual climate control and the smaller size of the GMC. She's always freezing and I roast when she's comfortable. Looks like I may be 'whipped' into another decision . Oh well, life is good. Greg

down to a ford or a chevy. I know i am gona git some flack for this. but i bet if we threw a cover over a chevy ford and a dodge and let you look under them. you would not buy a ford or a chevy. built ford tough poohy its all propaganda . my information is a few years old but ford owns or owned 70% of commins. why wont they put a commins diesal in there trucks. they wont build a 3/4 or one ton truck with a frame, trans a rear axle or a front axle that will take what that engine will dish out.ford tried a commins in 1989 for a year ford could not make it work without neutering it. a commins diesal has 1/2 the moving parts of a chevy or ford diesal. commins derates the engine 60% for dodge before it will put them in a truck. from the commins factory that engine is 300+ horse and 800+ foot pound of torque. one more tid bit .a commins is or was certified to pass emision tests to 185.000 and not need a rebuild to 500.000. from commins. but the decision is yours. i have friend that have chevys and fords. they seem happy, on the outside.LOL O one other thing look in your local paper. look at the trucks for sale count the number of chevys fords and dodges. It always looked to me like there is alot of happy dodge owners. just a humble opine

Badger,

I have the Edge Juice with the Attitude module. It has a lot of tuning parameters. The Allison can stand over 900 ft lbs shifting from 1-2, 2-3, and 3-4. The 4-5 shift can only take 680 ft lbs. With 245s, my box generates 380 HP at 2500 rpm and 810 ft lbs at 2300. It is rated as a 125 HP/350 ft lb increase. I set my box to always defuel the 4-5 shift, and the box always defuels if the tranny starts to slip. Of course, I don't do any fully stalled 4x4 launches, because that would break stuff. I did some when I only had the 90 HP box, but the 125 HP box makes 100 ft lbs more torque.

I had my truck's ECM reflashed a year ago to eliminate the lopey idle I sometimes got while it was warming up. That is the only problem I have had. As much as I obsess over the extra fuel filtration, most of the guys have no problems with there trucks. I'll post more later.

AFP, if you would, list the brands of all of the after market stuff that you have put on yours......whos fuel additive, whos filter, ect....the diesels they put in those 95's and the years around that time were crap and GM wouldn't stand behind their product, the pumps were always defective after 5000 to 20,000 mi....thanks, Boots

25k miles on my 2003 Dodge 2500 with High Output Cummins so far without any problems. (Except it's appetite for rear tires ) May have something to do with the pedal on the right.......
Installed a Banks 4" Monster exhaust, a Pro-Guard 7 intake filter & am waiting on the TST box. Have a few other upgrades including Rancho RSX 9000 shocks, Hella Rallye 4000 driving lights & some good mud tires.
My neighbor has an '03 Ford Powerstroke 6.0L that spends more time on the wrecker & at the shop than at home. Bad injectors, blown turbo from diesel dilution in the oil, rear main leaks, wiring harness problems, etc. I think he's PO'ed because the Dodge has been flawless so far.

frontstuffer, the "Ford owns Cummins" story is a bad rumor. Ford did have a 10% stake in Cummins years ago but sold it back to Cummins when Ford got cosy with International, the current author of the 6.0L Powerstroke engine. Cummins has contracted with Dodge to supply the ISBE 6 banger until 2007 for light truck use exclusively. Thats why the Cummins is an option in some of the bigger (F550 & F650) trucks, but not in the F250 & F350's.

Boots,

- I use a 50/50 mix of Total Power FPPF and 8+

- I have installed a Mega fuel filter kit

- I have an Amsoil air filter in a modified airbox

- I have the Edge Juice w/Attitude module

- I am using a GM 6.5 Lift Pump

- I had Bilstein shocks until I lifted the truck

All the above is available at: www.kennedydiesel.com

- I have a Rancho 4" lift with Rancho RS 9000 shocks

- I have Real Lift torsion bar relocaters

- I have 16x8" wheels with 3.375" backspacing and General Ameritrack ATs in 285/75R16. I'll probably go to BFG 295s later.

I still need to flip the strut rods on the lift kit, install a oil pressure switch and manual switch on the lift pump, install the OD lockout, install rear wheel spacers and fender flares. I may go all out and get the "cut out" style fender flares and put on 315s--which would make me want to change to 4.10 gears before I tow anything.
