Have an opportunity to pick up a crew cab with the 7.3 engine. It is in outstanding condition body wise. Owner reports motor has 50k miles on it and needs o-rings on a couple of injectors. Interior looks really nice. Any issues I should check for before buying this rig?

It has an automatic. I have a 90 ford crew cab in 4wd that has issues. Was thinking I could swap the front ends out? Maybe even my manual transmission? Any thoughts?

It will be a dog, slow and gutless. But the one we had on the farm was a pretty decent rig if you weren't in a hurry. Got decent mileage too.

Make sure the current owner changed out his coolant every 2 to 3 years and put the motorcraft additive in it. The E4OD automatics of that era were the weak link. If the tranny is good and engine has been maintained it should be a runner, like the previous poster stated, not the quickest truck on the block but hard to kill.

Only slow and gutless compared to a turbo diesel.

I had a 93. Get any info on the trans, mileage, fluid changes, etc. Smell the trans dipstick for burned fluid.

Check glow plug operation. Seems like I had to replace some glow plugs every yeAr.

You cAn add ATF and/or 2 stroke oil to the fuel no worries.

Mine got 14 mpg empty, loaded, towing no matter what.

They have better rear suspensions than my '11.

Good luck!

I had one for a few years. It had plenty of power until you hooked it up to a trailer over 5000lb. It got 19mpg on the highway at times and 15mpg in 4x4 running rough country. Which was impressive. I had to replace the injector pump around 185k and the guy who bought it had to replace the autotrans at around 200k. I also had to replace the transfer case with a used one out of a wrecking yard. New radiator, water pump, clutch fan also, I abused the crap out of it 4x4ing out in eastern Oregon. It is still going, The guy I sold it to uses it as his wood cutting truck/Hunting rig.

Mine had 246k on it when I traded it in. Didnt burn a drop of oil in 4k miles. I mean not a drop. You'll win no drag races for sure. I made my own Air filter and ripped the old airbox out. Mine got 21 MPG with 3.55's and a manual. Best motor I ever owned. 50k isn't even broke in for a 7.3.

The only thing you'll probably have issues with on that truck is the transmission.

I believe I am needing an alternator for this beast. Not charging the batteries at all. It appears i need a 1g alternator. It doesn't put out much amperage. I have read you can do a 1g to 3g conversion. Does anyone have any experience doing this?

Many Thanks

7.3 of that era is pretty good engine. I would put a grant turbo on it. INjectors are easy and cheap to install.

Trans, I rebuilt mine at 115K miles, hard, hard use. Upgraded for some heavy duty extra's, upgraded trans cooler helpful if pulling heavy loads in the heat in Az. I pulled a 4 horse steel trailer with 4 horses, engine is strong.

I had a jake brake installed on mine to help on those 7% down hill grades with the heavy load.

Mine got 15 mpg, 12 pulling 10K lbs.

Glow plugs go out, buy lucas, I may have some extra stuff, send me a pm, new upper and lower radiator hoses, glow plugs, will give you a deal.
