Fuel pump starts a high pitched whine when gas gets below a 1/4 tank. Still runs fine even below 1/4 tank and I don't want to replace it ($700 they've got to drop the tank) as long as it's running good if all I've got to do is keep the gas level above a 1/4 tank. Any chance it will go all at once or will it warn me by running rough, missing etc.
There was NO warning when mine quit.
The motor just died and barely had time to get it to the shoulder of the freeway
if I remember correctly about 160,000 miles on it.
I had a 2003 Sierra pickup. The fuel pump whined the last 100,000 miles of the 225,000 miles that I owned it. It never failed. That likely means yours will fail tomorrow....
My 2001 Chev Suburban's fuel pump chugged once and died at 145k. My 2002 GMC Sierra chugged 4x and croaked at 110k.
If it were I, I'd run the fuel down to near empty and get it replaced with an OEM pump.
All of mine (3) went between 50k and 100k
Replace it and the connector at the same time.
Better than getting stranded. Unless you never drive far from home and get free towing.
