I recently bought a set of Falken A/T 3 tires on a bud's recommendation.

He has two sets on his rigs and likes them pretty well.

He says they work good in "highway" snow.

I've got a 1/2 mile of driveway, that gains 300 feet elevation in it's length.

Are these tires going to work for me, in say, 1/2 to 1 foot of snow on this steep driveway?

I've got a Tacoma TRD 4X4 W/airlock rear end, and a 1/2" steel plate in the bed that weighs 200 lbs. for extra traction.

Thanks for any feedback!

I am planning on getting a set for my 4Runner. From what I read they are good in the snow and have the snow emblem. My application is for snowy unmaintained forest roads, so I hope they will work. I also carry chains, and lighter cable chains when things get serious. Cable chains are nice because they pop on in a few minutes.
Also interested in the feedback.

Wrong time of the year for asking about snow tires?

I'll post my results after I get some snow, in a few months.

My buddy just replaced a set on his Ram. He kept them rotated every 5,000 miles and only got 29k miles out of the set and that was with about 98% highway miles. No thanks!

Tread life is 55,000 mile warranty, and the deepest tread available according to their web page.

Corrected my post as it was 29k miles and not 19k. Still 29k seems way to short of the 55k they are suppose to get.

Lots of variables in how much life someone gets out of a set of tires. Proper inflation, regular rotations and the type of driving done, all contribute or detract, from tread life..

I won't have a problem going well over 55K on the set of 265/65/18 Hankook ATMs on my truck right now, before I replace them later this fall. Still almost an 1/8" of tread left. Got over 50K on the Cooper AT3s on the previous Silverado 4x4. Farmboy cousin's son put Falken A/Ts on his Silverado 4x4 back in the spring. Will find out how they work, come winter. He lives in Steuben Co, NY.

No personal experience, but I hang out some on the Tacoma forum and F150 forum. Those tires are discussed quite often there and generally get good reviews for traction. Most buyers are happy with the ride, but there are just enough who complain that they can't get them to balance well that I'm a little afraid to buy a set. Odds are that I'll get a good set, but I'm not sure I'm willing to take the chance. FWIW I hear the same argument with Cooper AT/3's. That is what is on my Ford now and I have zero complaints. I have 53,000 miles on them and they did fine for me in deep snow a year ago when I hunted in Colorado.

I'm gonna need new tires soon and the Falkens are on my radar. I'm either going Falken, back to Cooper again or spend the big bucks for BFG KO2's.

I ran them all last winter on and extensive off road. You should have no problem on your driveway. Solid tire with no complaints from me, no issues with balancing them. You will want to get them siped for sure.

Virgil, How is the road noise on your TA3's? I had a set of tires years ago, and they just howled. I hated them, and now that is a big phobia of mine.

Not Virgil but I've had 235/75R-15 Falkens on my Cherokee XJ going into their third winter. Can't comment on winter performance because we haven't had any winter weather to speak of. BUT road noise I can. VERY quiet for as aggressive a tread as they are. A LOT quieter than the Yokohama Geolander G015's on our '96 Blazer which have a way less aggressive tread pattern. They're as quiet as the General Grabber AT2's I had on the XJ also.
I had Toyo M/T's on my Tacoma before I got these Falkin's

The Toyo's were VERY noisy, but these Falkens are as quiet as highway tires.

I did get 50,000 miles out of the Toyo's but like the quietness and ride of the Falken's WAY better!

Thanks for the feedback on the noise. On nice weather days I prefer open windows to AC. Tire noise kills that for me.

Friend has them on a 4Runner. Noisy and he said he wouldn't buy them again because of it. I was in it again today and they are. They don't howl, but you always know they are turning.

Strange. Mine are probably the quietest tires I have run on my Tacoma.

I was looking for tires earlier in the year, as my son was telling my back in May that mine were almost bald and I had to take his word for it as I was out of country at the time working. Anyways, I asked here about tires and did some research on the best AT tires. Falken's came highly recommended to me from the Campfire, but my research showed they wore out quickly. When I got home and saw my tires still had some life in them I decided not to buy until the spring, as I run studded tires in the winter here anyways. Anyways, I was getting mixed results from local tires shops when I would ask about the Falken's and I think the tire life is why.

If you like Coopers, the Cepek trail EXP shows promise for the $. I just put a set on my older Tundra to try. I don’t typically drive in snow much, but all terrain, off road, greasy clay mud, etc....I’ve got some milestar Patagonia tires on my FZJ80, that are really more of aggressive ATs and they’re far more quiet on road than my BFG ATs, with good shoulders, siping, and tread spacing. Not sure if any of the IH8MUD reviews cover snow and either of those, but maybe worth a look.
