I just bought a Chevy 1500 HD with the 6.0. It's an 03 with 150k on it. I have the serpentine belt off. Would you do the water pump while you were in there?

Yep. New hoses, thermostat and fresh coolant too.

While you're replacing coolant, replace the heater hose nipple on the firewall. It's a common failure point.

2500 HD, right?

+1 on the heater hose nipple. need a plastic deal to get it off.

Nope 1500 HD. Still 8 bolt hubs but the rear axle is semi floating.

Only thing to fail on my 6.0 is water pump.

I own 6, with 6.0's. Mileage ranging from 75,000-334,000.
I've never had a water pump go out on one. The 334,000 has had an alternator and a starter, 2 have had transmissions, 3 have had all the brake lines replaced and only one the heater hose plastic fitting cracked.

IMO the GM 6.0 is one of the best gas powerplants for fleet vehicles ever made.

I had a 6.0L in my 2003 Yukon XL, which was a 3/4 ton SUV; GMC version of the Suburban. Got it with roughly 100k and sold it with roughly 150k.

Things that I had to fix:

-Pump rub (Google it frown )
-Fuel pump
-Alternator
-Throttle body actuator
-Stepper motors in dash
-Lights in dash
-Blower resistor
-Window module in door

I was surprised by the pump rub, as infant mortality seems to be more common. Mine chewed through the case shortly after I bought it. The fuel pump issue doesn't seem that uncommon.

The alternator had a rough bearing on it when I got it so I replaced it along with the belts and tensioner bearings. The blower motor bearings went out taking out the resistor so those were replaced as well.
