Thinking about selling some guns and stuff to fund the purchase of a FJ40 land cruiser. I try not to buy a bunch of toys unless I let go of things I don’t use very often or if ever
Thinking sell vudoo 22, custom 6br, and possibly a couple others I honestly don’t shoot. Purchase a decent fj40. Wanted one since I was a kid.
Wife would be on board as long as I don’t sell the fishing boat. Thing is I keep saying do I really need a fj40 that I wouldn’t hardcore off-road. More just cruise around or take trips to mountains in( gravel or paved roads). Downside is I have 3 kids and it wouldn’t fit 2 car seats without adding rear bench seats.
Am I being foolish to buy one

Sold the Cz scorpion. Sold the kimber 45. Figure sell guns I don’t use and fund at least half of a decent fj40.
Thought about selling the boat since it’s a jet and can’t have the whole family in it at once. Wife says no to that.
Use the fj40 for trips to trout fish, fun driving around/cruising, and could take it to ride some easier trails that don’t require hardcore rigs.
But I know I cannot fit all 3 kids in it so makes it tough decision. I guess I could put a Bench seat in back and make that work though
What about a 60 series? More room, all the nostalgia ( yes I own one so I am biased), and they did make a third row option. You can fit two car seats and a small child in the back bench as is though. My 3rd cruiser will be a 40 so I understand the desire.
The others just don’t turn my fancy like the 40 unfortunately. I have loved them for years. Maybe I should just do it and deal with the details later lol
Dayum!...this thread prompted me to poke around for prices. Those babies ain't cheap for a forty or fifty year old jeep! These are a bit nostalgic for me. I spent many of my first hunts bouncing around in the back seat of dad's friend's 40!

Ended up with an '11 Lexus GX 460 Premium...2 owners from AZ & NV w/95K miles
Have since totally serviced it throughout...added Iron Man lift along with 17" LT tire/wheel pkg
Wife luvs it...replaced her '05 Tacoma with this.

I’m not looking for a fully restored rig. They bring crazy money. More a good base to start with and work on from there. I’m more than capable mechanically so it doesn’t scare me to wrench on something. Unfortunately it may take a while to find one that has good bones and isn’t full of bondo.
Or maybe I’ll get over the desire to have one and just keep looking at pictures. Cheaper for sure
The market for them has just boomed as I am sure you are seeing. They are bringing crazy money especially on BAT.
Rust is the enemy on all the old LCs and yes wrenching is mandatory.
Both very nice. Have a nice one I’m gonna try to look at Saturday. One owner. Needs a little love but mostly rust free and all original. Lady is a patient of a friend of mine and wants to sell to someone who will restore and use. So maybe I get a fair deal and it’s in as good a shape as she says
They're getting rarer and rarer everyday. I bought mine 23 years ago with 25K original miles on it. It's got about 50K on it now. Find a good one or one that's been restored well. I can't imagine the collector car market will be terribly strong for the next couple years. It always pays to buy quality. If interest in these evaporates, only the best examples will have any real value.

When I was in the Army, a buddy of mine was back home in Iowa, and he bought one. He drove it back to Ft. Bragg all the way from Iowa. I doubt he got over 60mph on the whole trip, and it wore him out.
We had a lot of fun in that vehicle, but it sure wasn't very comfortable, even on short trips. It was great off-road, of course, but on the road it wasn't much fun. You might take that into consideration, if you're gonna carry the wife and kids with you much. I think I'd look for something more modern and comfortable for the kiddos.
We have a suv and a f150 4 door. This was more to be cool and because I have wanted one since I was a kid. Probably wouldn’t take long mileage trips in it. Take the kids to the park, mountains, fishing. Stuff like that.
Whatever I end up with will get power steering conversion, disc brakes, and most likely vintage air AC.

Great rigs , first car was a 1970 fj40. Sold it for a few thousand and kick myself all the time for selling it. Its hard to find a decent a around here and the nice ones are over 10k
I had a 1971 FJ40 and I loved that thing. Mine developed rust badly and I purchased an 1984 CJ7 with the plans of restoring the FJ40 but after a few years of it sitting in the garage taking up space I sold it way too cheaply.
My stepdaughter's family has a 1973 FJ40 that is in fairly good shape and I have offered to purchase it but they don't seem interested in letting it go.
The link above showing one available in UT for $21,000.00 is a very good deal with the disc brake and power steering modifications.
Still looking around. Guess I need to go ahead and list the 6br and vudoo 22lr for sale. Looked at a all original one owner fj40. Made offer and she broke down crying. It was her husbands and she just isn’t ready to sale I don’t think. Told her to just tell me when she is ready and my offer stands. Kinda broke my heart to see her break down. I would imagine that would be very difficult to do
Also going to look at a 1977 international scout ii traveler my dads buddy has. Looks cool. Dad said he believes it has a AMC 345 engine.
Scout should have an IH 304, 345, or 392 V8. They’re all basically the same and the same engines were used in buses and medium duty trucks like dump trucks, as well as stationary equipment like irrigation pumps. The IHs used Dana axles in both ends, 77 should be D44s. Auto transmissions were Chrysler 727s IIRC. Look for rust in the rockers and more importantly the door jambs.
My neighbor growing up was/is a Scout guy and has a 75 Scout II and an 80 Traveler. Pretty neat rigs.
Love Scouts, they are one of the few vehicles that hold my interest like a LC. Sadly, they keep pace with a LC on the rust race though.
I just don’t see any other older 4x4 vehicles that turn my fancy honestly. I’m in no hurry either so I’ll keep looking till I find the right one. I prefer FJ40 to scout 2 honestly, but the scout would be cool also fixed up restomod. Time will tell I guess
