With a 12 gauge slug gun? I know the slug is capable, just wondering if anyone has done it.
Cain't think of a single reason to......
Nope, me neither.
Unless the zoo is gonna open up elk hunting.

Don’t see why anyone would use a gauge.

There’s several places where short range weapons (shotguns, muzzleloaders) are required.
@longarm

Brother Dan does it with a 20 gauge...
Nope.
Sir wam’s, I shot an bull elk off a cows back with a red rider when I was 8 but never recovered him. lol
Can’t find a reason to hunt a slug gun unless the X took everything except granddad‘s old shotgun in the divorce.
There is an elk herd down the road a piece from me that hangs out in a dairy field literally across the street from town. After too many issues with rifle hunters the state put a high power restriction around town.

The Fudds just put slugs in their smooth bore shotguns and went to town on the herd opening morning. One guy even had to put down his crippled bull in the McDonald’s parking lot.

Needless to say the next year they turned that area to bows only. Of course that town is nationally famous for a guy getting killed while letting a horse fück him so.......
Not enough energy past ~69 1/2 yards.
I know a few people who have shot elk with them in the short range weapons hunts, mainly in southern Idaho around the farms. It seemed to work just fine but I have never been there during the hunt. I think they all just used their bird shotguns with Walmart special slugs.
Savage 220f, Rem Premier Accutip 3" sabot 20 gauge.

There are some large herds that hangup in fairly densely populated areas around here. The seasons are short, mostly on private, and primitive weapons/shotgun only. A buddy used to hunt it, but permission got hard to get. (I never did. Don’t like hunting small, private parcels, or with shotguns. smile )

Kinda funny, F&W implemented the seasons based on landowner complaints about the elk being hard on everything. But they don’t want to give access to hunters.
The Cascade Head area on the Oregon coast is shotgun only during firearms season. A bunch of houses and close proximity to Hwy 101 prompted the rule. OSP busts guys every season hunting with a rifle there.
Nice shot Longarm! Love that knife!
RS308MX: Just 2 weeks ago my main Hunting partner killed a large cow Elk at 80 yards with a 12 gauge and a slug.
One shot one kill.
It was on a late extended Hunt and in a somewhat inhabited area - shotguns and slugs were all that was allowed.

Its done with archery every year......
1. no, I havent, nor do I intend to
2. if I HAD to use a shotgun, I'd use a 20 ga instead of a 12, just cause the ballistics of such a slug are not far off a 45-70, and that seems like plenty whompum. the 12ga wouldnt gain any range, ballistics wise, over a 20.
There is a season here in Idaho where it's open cow elk any weapon with in a mile of irrigated ground. And whitetail doe short range weapon. Which includes slug guns.

I've used a .45-70. if that counts!
