Had a pretty good elk season over-all, done better done worse.

Started in August helping a couple friends with cows.

Friend of mine from Illinois had never shot an elk before, we remedied that opening day:

I snuck out on a day off and had this one killed and back to the truck by noon, 6mm Rem. 90 grain accubond 194 yards:

Next was general tag hunt with 2 friends.

Day 3 I shot this one, 247 yards with my 7-08 140 AB:

Day 5 my buddy shot this one with a 7 RM at about 70 yards:

Last day of the general season, my friend killed this cow, about 12 days before his 80th birthday. He tried out my 7-08 worked well for him, easy shot 120 yards:

That wrapped up the general season.

Next was hunting late season here in WY with cow and bull tags with some friends/family.

My buddy Jeff and I both shot our 3rd elk of the year out of a herd of 400 or so.

My buddies cow, 207 yards with a 300 RUM:

Mine same distance with 7-08, my 80th elk:

(cont.) more late season elk for my NR friends and my nephew.

They had a good day, all shoot 7 RM's and the shots were all between 200-300 yards they shot 3 bulls and 2 cows by 2 PM.

The two cows they shot, the guy that didn't shoot a cow chose not too...figured 5 in one day was enough, probably right.

Finally after a bunch of delays, picked up my nephew in Billings and got back in time for a 1/2 day hunt. Saw 35 elk, all bulls and he shot this one just before dark at 127 yards with his 7-08 and 120 grain ballistic tip. Broke the spine and exited upper 1/3rd of the body, done deal dropped in its tracks and his 3rd elk and first bull. There were 5 bulls together, 2 six points the same age class as his, but both were busted up pretty bad so, he chose the best 5 point.

Lots of game bags filled:

Always sort of sorry its over, but was getting pretty tired of quartering and packing elk. Have a friend with one more cow tag valid through January probably give him a hand if he wants to get another one.

All total went 13/15 may get 14/15 as one of my IL friends may come back after Christmas...we'll see.

That's a lot of elk to take care of, no doubt. Lots of happy people when they open their freezers though.

Well done!

Elkslayers! Are there any elk left in Wyoming?
Posted By: wytex Re: Couple/Few 2021 elk - 12/20/21
Nice going Buzz.
Saw a big herd out in the flats off of 34 Saturday, Laramie side, if you need to find some cows this week.

Nothing like shooting a bunch of cows to thin the herd for the following years. Congrats!

Nice, and that is a lot of meat to cut!

The herds those cows come from have been growing by 3-5% a year ever since I've lived in Wyoming. High cow/calf ratio's and flat harvest numbers.

Lots of knife work to do. Lots of roasts and back-strap too
Posted By: Oregonmuley Re: Couple/Few 2021 elk - 12/20/21
Congrats! Thats a lot of elk - wish we had the chance to fill tags like that in Oregon:)
Posted By: Deans Re: Couple/Few 2021 elk - 12/21/21
Are you tired of skinning and processing elk yet? That is a lot of elk. Congratulations.

FANTASTIC!
Posted By: RipSnort Re: Couple/Few 2021 elk - 12/21/21
Great post! What's the nearest town in Wyoming where all this killing went down? I lived in Lander for a few years. What knives did you use for gutting, breaking down and skinning chores?

With a Elk hunting career of 80 animals i'm sure you have a lot to share on Elk cartridges and bullets. Using a7-08 in some of your posted pictures is a statement on what is adequate for Elk.

Well done season , for sure!

Nice. I was lucky to pull a tag in KY in 2018. Being around Elk in person was something else.
Posted By: lone wolf Re: Couple/Few 2021 elk - 01/07/22
Sounds like a lot of fun and lots of good meat for the freezer.
Posted By: Kimber7man Re: Couple/Few 2021 elk - 01/09/22
Well done Buzz, happy new year.
Nonsense

Everyone knows that you have to use at least a .340wby to kill an elk!

Very cool pics and stories! I live in Michigan and dream about elk hunting out west

Buzzy,

Looks like you had a good season but thats pretty much par for you.

Have you managed to not get spattered from the Ryan Busse/BCHA schitt show?

Your politics aside you do seem to do well in the field.

Your boy Brandon is doing a splendid job in the White House. You guys almost got that terrorist to run the BLM.

I still smile thinking about you sayin one needed a .338 Win Mag for elk so you could shoot through trees. wink
