I have an elk hunt booked for December. For the last 40 years I’ve used either 180gr Nosler Partitions or 180 gr Failsafes. Obviously, Failsafes are no longer made and I can’t find any factory loads with partitions. So, today I purchased 2 boxes of federal premium 30-06 loaded with 180gr Trophy Copper bullets. I’ve done a little reading today and everything points to this being a fine bullet for elk. For the last few years I’ve used my 308 win loaded with federal premium factory ammo and 180gr partitions. No problem killing elk. Recently, My son gave back to me my old Ruger MK2 with which I’ve killed probably 25 elk. I’ll use it this year for the first time in many years. For those of you who have used the trophy copper bullet, we’re you satisfied? Thanks for your responses.

I'd bet they'll be good buddy. Maybe shoot a few into water jugs or whatever else you might have to get an idea of expansion.

I have a box of the 150's for the 7 Rem Mag as well, but have not tried them yet.

I have used the 270, 7mm-08 and 308 Trophy Copper, and all have performed very well.

On a cow elk hunt two years ago, I used the 7mm-08, and she went right down. It was a pass through so I don’t have the bullet, but the exit wound was significant.

The Trophy Copper is a Nosler ETip that Federal and Federal adds relief grooves.

I still don’t know why Nosler won’t do this, but the Federal rounds shoot better in all my rifles versus the ETips.

I bought some 165s for my Remington 30-06 a couple years back. Didn’t shoot worth a damn in my rifle so I didn’t hunt with them.

I've had the same problem when asking about Winchester Deer Season Copper Impact. I bought several boxes because they were the only .308 ammo I could find recently to try out in a new rifle.

I've only found a few online experiences with them on deer (all positive reviews), but not enough people using them to get a good idea of how they perform on animals larger than deer.

An email to Winchester ammo got a reply saying they were designed for deer but they should work well on elk.

I have only used the Federal Trophy Copper 150s out of a 308 win on a 175lb wild boar. Shot thru the gristle plate both shoulder blades andout the other side. No recovered bullet. Dead pig.

Shot my largest bull (364”) with the Trophy Bonded Bearclaw bullet; the Trophy Copper’s predecessor. Mine was a 30 caliber 180 grain bullet from my 300 mag. Shot distance was just a tad over 250 yards quartering on. It blew through the shoulder and was recovered in the pelvic canal, resting on top of the bladder. I’d say that was five feet of straight line penetration after breaking the shoulder.

They say the Federal version is even better….hard to imagine!

I think you're thinking of the Tipped Bear Claw. The Trophy Copper is all copper.

I’ve been shooting Barnes TTSX in .257, 7mm, and .30 calibers for many seasons with 100% success. I’m about to try the 6.5 127 gr LRX this season. I don’t see why the Trophy Copper wouldn't work just as well. Happy Trails

I couldn't tell if the gun you just got back was a 30-06 and you only want to use that gun?

Those grouped very well in my son's 7mm Rem mag M70 classic. Impressive enough that I bought some to try in my 7mm Rem mag. Hell, they will be the yard stick for my hand load accuracy.

I was lucky to get drawn in 2018 for a Kentucky Elk hunt. Folks told me to go with a good "Bonded" bullet and I was whatever I just use my deer loads. I think I was lucky on how my hunt turned out. I was able to get within 50 yards of my bull with my 7mm Remington Magnum. Two shots within a few inches of each other and the bull maybe went 75 yards. When we were skinning it out I had copper jacket pieces in the hide and the bullet did not go all the way through. Blood trail was very light, but he was in sight the whole time. Lesson learned was don't skimp on ammo for a hunt that cost about $5,000.
