I was looking at land in different states and several mention that over the counter Elk tags are available. Does it take a certain size of property to get them or anyone can get them. Trying to figure out the rules in Montana, Colorado, Wyoming New Mexico and Utah is confusing as hell when you are used to Florida where they just say you can kill 5 deer total no matter the season
If it is an OTC tag, anyone can buy them. Most units have public and private property in them. Public land is open to anyone.
A note. This year because of extreme winter kill, 2nd and 3 rd season Northwest CO. OTC units will be only five days long. Won't do much to help the elk by cutting the days, but CPW still gets the money for the tags.
Buzz bought an over-the-counter tag once.......he had to stand on a Sears catalog.
Come on......you older guys remember those.
Toilet paper, down south.
Montana, Idaho, Colorado and Wyoming are OTC for residents. I believe Oregon and Washington both are OTC as well. Utah is too, but has a cap, so you have to get one right away.
For the record anything Werner says is suspect, he's never killed an elk.
Oh, and Werner, it's good to be me, I get a NR Native combo license every year for half of what the rest of the NRs pay. No way I'll have less than 4 elk tags this season and maybe 7 if I get lucky in the draws.
I'll hang pictures so you can live vicariously.
For future reparation reference.

You can get a leftover cow tag in some places, if you want to go hunting.

Lots of water makes for lots of feed. In the east with it's high rainfall, feed and deer are plentiful. Here in the west, it's high and dry. The amount of wildlife feed is dramatically less than in the east and animal numbers are much lower as a result.
A genius, in the making......

Idaho has OTC deer and elk tags for non-res but there's a cap on them. They put them all on sale online on Dec 1. This year, the demand doubled the supply. There were so many non-res online at the same time that it crashed the computer system.

It's your fault, you told him to act like a retard on the elk forum.
Shouldn't you and Jack Handle be doing step-a-robics, hand in hand....over in the backpacking forum?
Truly TFF!

OP,
In Oregon you can hunt on your land if it’s 40 acres or bigger. But that’s only doe and cow elk.
To hunt bucks and bull elk you need minimum of 160 acres to get LOP (land owner preference) tags. And you get 2. It’s all in the regs, On ODFW.
IMHO 160 acres parcel is pretty small parcel for elk.
I’d want at least 1/2 square mile (320) if not whole square mile (640 acres)but that’s going to cost you. Especially in good elk country
Good luck

CO does not differentiate between res and nonres for OTC bull tags. Anybody can buy one. OTC tags are unlimited tags and CO would rather sell them to a nonres than a res because nonres are a lot higher in price.
I grew up in CO and killed a lot of elk on OTC tags. But now that I am a resident of TX I dont bother with OTC. I would rather work the draw for elk tags
I've got a cow 4 years in a row in an Idaho OTC late cow hunt. The tags are capped, 1st come, 1st served. The past few years, we haven't had any problem getting them but this year is going to be different. Our hunt 2 years ago had 2500 tags and last year it was down to 700 but we still got in. It's still 700 this year but the hunt next door dropped from 2500 to 500. There's going to be an extra 2000 hunters trying for those 700.
We get them at a local hardware store. The store starts a list the day before and has all the hunter info written out in order of when you get on the list. When they go on sale, the IDFG turns on the computer and the gal at the store types furiously to get as many tags done as possible before they run out. She doesn't pause to take money. She puts them in a pile and we sort it out after the list is done.
A lovely story.......and you told it so well.
Hoping you get a tag (and fill) to your last year.
