Bought a CVA Wolf for elk muzzle loading season this year. Purchased some 370 grain maxi balls and will shoot 2F black powder. Took it to the range the other day and it shot great. At 100 yards kept the group close to a 3-4 inch circle. I expect better groups the more I shoot and get a feel for the gun. Just need to clean the barrel every third shot to reduce fouling.

I feel confident the 370 grain bullet will do a bone crushing job if I do not get a clean lung punch.

Shoot BH 209, and you can take 100 shots without swabbing the bore. It will also be more consistent, have more power, and won't suck up any moisture. You can leave it loaded for the whole season with no worries.

I can also recommend a better bullet if you're not married to the maxi.

Thanks Mauser, I considered the muzzle loading forum, but I intend to shoot elk, so I figured more elk hunters and persons of knowledge about shooting elk would be here.

I will look at the BH 209, it sounds like something I would like. I also shoot flintlock rifles with patched round ball with 2F and they can be shot a lot, without swabbing the bore.
The shallow flat groove rifling for in-lines makes a big difference for cleaning.

What other bullet do you recommend. I have about a month before time to go. May give it a try also.

I like this bullet. It's a bore size Barnes bullet. Perfect terminal performance, and just like in the CF Barnes. You don't need a heavy bullet to have it work. It comes in 250gr and 300gr. I use the 250gr for deer and cow elk, and the 300gr for bull elk.

You want a nice firm push down the barrel when you load them. It will help the bullet stay on the powder charge, and also help ignite the BH 209 which needs some compression. I'll guess your barrel will like the .500 or.501 bullet.

Was wondering, I have been shooting 100 grains of 2F. What would be an equal load of the BH209 ?

80-85 gr will be close to 100gr of 2F BP.

Mauser, one more question. What is good to clean the Black Horn 209 with. I read you do not use "water", only an oil base cleaner. Not sure what water does or doesn't do. I bought some Hoppes #9, is that acceptable cleaning fluid?

Hoppe's will work, but make sure you don't have the one made for black powder.

I like to use Eliminator Bore cleaner made by Bore Tech Inc. I find it great for fouling, but especially good for removing copper.
